Factory Short Shifter Part Number and Best Price for Part?
Going to give Eric a call tommorrow to order one. Thanks guys
Huh. Really?
I'd always read that you need to cut off the white plastic bushings that hold the shifter in the black housing to install the B&M.
I will also add that the green clip above on the 997 shifter is the alignment tool. It holds the shifter in neutral: get the shifter to neutral, clip it on the old shifter, disconnect. When you install the new shifter the clip holds the new shifter in the same position so you don't loose alignment. At least that worked for me.

I thought this was pretty common knowledge. I'd post links to reference threads, but am too lazy tonight...
The factory short shifter from the 996's literally looked identical to the B&M except painted black instead of blue. The 997 FSS does come with the complete housing and although I have not personally compared the two back to back most people I have talked to have said that the 997 FSS is smoother than either the B&M/996 shifters. I believe we may be talking about maybe a 10% difference in perceived feel, which may have to do with the fact that its easier to align the shifter cables with the 997 shifter.
That all said, if you're looking at the B&M shifter then Eric at BP has a sick price, you won't find it better anywhere else. If you're set on a factory short shift kit, we have put them on sale here (they'll work on both 996's or 997's):
Porsche Factory Short Shift Kit - SALE - $349.95

It has to do with the cables on install....start here
wross, thanks for the link. I would definitely like to look into this to get rid of the notchiness, but it looks like you have to be a member to view the link. is it something you can cut and paste for us? Thanks!

I had the B&M in my car and I was actualy missing gates between 3rd and 2nd at times both on and off track. I've swapped to the 997 OEM shifter and like it much better. It is smooth with no notchy feel to it at all. The one issue I have is that my first gear has always been a little hard to engage (we think there is a tranny rebuild in my future) and the OEM shifter makes it more abrupt when I get to the bad spot on the main shaft/first gear.
I'd never go back to the B&M... My next move would be to the Porsche Motorsports GT3 Cupcar shifter/cable kit, which runs about $1000.

Seriously if you are not a member of Renntech you should never mod your car. That site is THE best site for technical information on the net. Just join. (BTW, I am not affiliated in any way).
I have the FSS on my 996tt and love it. I've never had an opportunity to drive a stock 997 shifter so I can't comment on that. I have read very good things about the 997 shifters and they're very reasonably priced. However, the Porsche SSK in my car is wonderful. The throws are very short with a positive engagement. I wouldn't call it notchy although I have driven a number of cars with, what I would consider, notchy shifters. BTW, the price that Suncoast is offering is a really good price for the FSS. I think I paid another 60-70 bucks when I bought mine from them about a year ago.
