Blew a Tire on a way to work...Tire Pressure Monitoring System?
So today I'm driving the 911tt to work today, all is good but since yesterday the car was pulling a little bit to the right. Since it's cold as **** I didn't feel like checking the tire pressures since I just checked it about a wek ago when the car got alligned. Well I'm takin an off ramp and dang, the whole tire shoot out an seperated from the rim!!!
So, I'm on the ramp in my suit in blistering cold changing the tire at an incline....how fun!!! I was shocked to see that the 2002 911 doesn't have some kind off tire pressure monitoring system. Are you guys using some aftermarket alternative? |
same thing happened to me twice
the first was within one week of ownership the last time it happened was on january 1st 2009 the tire came off the rim while i was on the highway going about 60-65mph it was the rear wheel and i think it was about 25 degrees that day |
did you hit a pothole? I gotta to watch out as well. We have no shortage of potholes here :)

It does not sound like a tire PSI problem if the tire dropped that fast in pressure. If you had a blow out it was caused by faulty tire, puncture, impact, etc... There are aftermarket systems but I (and friends) have not had luck with them.
|
I think that the pressure dropped and I didn't notice. The car was sitting for a long time and the rims probably dont seal too good. The car is new to me and how it drives. So at one point it crossd my mind that the right side seems louder going over bumps, so I was gonna get off the highway exit to check on it. Once on the ramp taking a turn the tire separated. Messed up my wheel liner a bit too. I'm gonna get one of these aftermarket systems and see how they work, I see that the valvesteem mount ones are quite cheap and wouldn't need the rim to be taken apart for battery changes and such.

I dont know if it was a blowout, surely looked like it:) Basically I was left with the tire in 3 pieces. The 2 sidewalls and the midle. |

Glad to hear that you were able to maintain control of your car after the blowout, without injury. |

We have two systems, the Hella and the Orange Electric. I use the Hella system in my F-150 and it works excellent. Hella: http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=BH1&...ailA.jsp&ID=51 Orange Electric: http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=BH1&...ailA.jsp&ID=55 |
I had the same problem - wrecked a good tire and decided to fit a TPMS.
But I found to my cost that the Hella system won't fit thru' the holes in the rims. Still don't have a TPMS :-( Maybe the Orange brand are slightly narrower and will fit ? |
I just got the Orange Electric system from Tirerack and had Paul from Protosport do a custom install on my console and this system is incredible. It gives you tire pressure display on all four sides on the monitor as well as temperature. I'll post some pictures of the install tonight.

Will these work with BBS made Porsche hollow spoke turbo twists...?
TIA jeff |
Good info, I'm definatelly getting a TPMS. This boo boo cost me $500 bucks today that could've been easily spent on mods or strippers....;)
Any confirmation if the said systems work with what wheels? I got stockers now, but when "Change" finally comes I might get some rims:) Would be neat if we can get a list. |
I believe they do, I know that the Hella system does not work with most Porsche wheels.

Tony, could you post pictures of your display install. I warn you, I might copy you.
Thanks. Jeff |
