don't write anything on the credit card slip..if he sees it he may refuse to release your car (ever hear of a mechanics lien)..you can call your credit card company later and tell them you want to dispute the charge and he will get nothing...

I really can not understund why there are so great charges...Here we charge about $600 for replacing E46M3 clutch+flywheel with SMG service function for the SMG ECU to learn new clutch...This job can be done only with GT1 or Modic2 and not with Autologic...And it takes about 5 to 6 hours to be done...On your case... i really do not know...

Here is the e-mail I just sent (the names have been changed to protect the guilty)

Dear $#%^,

I have discussed my clutch replacement with several local BMW mechanics and also several other BMW experts that I know throughout the country.

The overwhelming consensus is that the job should be priced at no more than $1,000.00. The factory book time for an SMG clutch replacement is 10.5 book hours although many independents are able to get it done in less.

I have made arrangements to take the car to another local shop to have the SMG reprogramming completed and am willing to pay you $1,200.00 for your services. I will pay that amount today if you allow me to pick the car up. This solution was recommended to me by my attorney.

I hope that this agreement is acceptable to you and apologize for the challenges that my car has presented. However after two months it is probably best to seek another solution.

I hope that there are no hard feelings between us over this matter and I will still bring my other cars to you for service (I need to have tires mounted on my G35 and Cayenne).

Sincerely,

Dr_jitsu

Todd,

A clutch is one of those things like you were carrying under your arm the other week at Cars and Coffee. Most women carry them too.

Dr, are you sure this guy knows programming SMG using GT1? I have one of the few personally owned GT1's here in IL, i have loaned it our to some tuners in the past. From what i have heard its very tricky to program an SMG...Good luck on that one with the new shop, hope they can figure it out.

I know this doesnt solve the problem...but i agree with your approach below. Its very very fair.

Murse=Man Purse....how is it that our threads always end up as comedy skits?

I wonder if Old Gregg has a Murse to match his TuTu?

Back to the OT, I have come to an agreement and am picking up the car in an hour, I will post the result.

Nice job on the letter.
Like others have said, unless he brought up the increases expenses and got your approval prior to the work being done, then he has no leg to stand on. He has to peroform the work that is on the estimate at that price.

Sean don't be a puss.. Just kill him, then sacrificially eat his heart to gain his strength. I may not be a Dr, but I know a win-win when I see one.
