Chipped SL65 kill...........

Long story.......

I did another VMax day yesterday. Basically this is an event where about 30 like-minded supercar owners get together and hire out an entire disused airport for a day. The airport in question is called Bruntingthorpe (here in England) and it hasn't been in use for many years. It was one of the biggest non-commercial airports in the UK and was used for heavy jet-bombers in the 1960s. The main attraction is the 60 metre wide 2mile long runway. http://www.bruntingthorpe.com/about.htm It costs us about £4500 ($8,300) to hire the complete airport for the day exclusively, which works out at about $275 each.

We have a timing beam setup at about 1.25miles to measure speeds and leave 3/4 of a mile for braking for safety (there are no rules here, not even helmets). It is possible to enter the runway from the taxi-way at one end at about 80mph and even hold drifts at 100mph onto the runway if you are brave enough.

I went up in my Ruf GT2, with my friend in his modifed GT2 and met another friend on the way in his 550 Maranello.

The weather was perfect, no rain all day and not that windy although there was a slight headwind all-day which lowered the speeds compared to previous days for most cars (where top speeds had reached 200mph).

A great selection of cars were there, Ferraris (550, 550M, 575, 360CS), Porsches (3 GT2s, GT3RS, about 4 Turbos), Aston DB9 and DB7 Vantage, Merc SL55 and SL65, Lambo Murcielago and lots of the other TVRs, Nobles etc (I shall post pictures tommorrow hopefully)

No final official results from timing, but I am fairly certain I won overall with 189mph (my GPS datalogger backs it up) and it was still accelerating hard (I'll post data-log chart later as well). I also did quite a lot of races off-the-line on the way to the first corner (the 90 degrees corner onto the main runway) and was not beaten all day. I did about 20 top speed runs and gave loads of passenger rides to drivers of other cars.

I also managed to do a huge spin onto the runway. I was really going for it round the bend and I lost it at about 90mph half-way across the runway. We spun at least 4 or 5 full rotations, with the first few on the runway and last one on the grass, which was a bit worrying, but we stopped well before the trees (thank goodness).

Anyway back to the 'kill'. There was a guy there with an SL65 which was de-limited and modified to 650bhp and 800+lb ft of torque (at the crank not the wheels). He was giving it everything and I have to say it was a truly amazing car. He did 187mph, so was very close behind in the results. He also would have carried a lot less speed through the corner, so it's fair to say he was accelerating very hard at the top end, possibly even faster than my car (given the big GT2 spoilers etc and my lower power). On his 187mph run, he said his speedo was showing 187mph i.e. it was 100% accurate, which makes the fact that he did an indicated 205mph on the public roads on the way to the event both amazing and a bit mad!

I also raced him head-to-head from a stand-still up to about 140mph and I pulled away from him by many car lengths. However I had to give it everything and do fast gearchanges, as in his car the computer does everything (launch and gearchanges). That car is really fast and he's also got a button that makes the roof disappear, which I cannot seem to find in my GT2. (I guess that makes a 'roof conversion' vs a 'Ruf conversion - ha ha )

Anyway in summary a great day, a great play and I've got some serious respect for modded SL65s (even if they are slower. )

Pics to follow later.

Heres a GPS datalog of one of the runs:

As you can see it's still accelerating quite quickly at 187mph when I hit the brakes hard. (Speedo was showing 195mph by comparison.)

You have to look up an "AMG ETR" plate in the DVLA, it will really complement your RGT2 ( I don't think Evan would mind with your RUF being in the UK). Well deserved kill and glad you "cleaned house". The RUF 550 package is always underestimated in light of the crazy power claims by the tuners, so it's nice to see what one could do against tough opposition.

Hamann,

Chromies are off for the winter............

03-Turbo,

Special plates in the UK are limited to character type and very expensive. Could not get AMG ETR. The plate 'RUF 1' is for sale currently at $45,000. Highest price ever for a plate was $400,000 for K1NGS (which looks like Kings).

I notice your shift points are much higher than stock.
Are you running bigger wheels or shifting at 7200RPM?
