I just love this car

Well today I decided to take out the front differential to take it apart and see what's inside

I'm halfway done taking it out, and I'm just amazed on how easy it's going. Every bolt comes out like butter thanks to the high quality steel used. Everything makes sense and comes out easily in sequence. These cars were made to be easy to service. I just wish I had room for a lift. I need a taller garage.

Just got it out. Came out like butter. I initially thought that I'm gonna have to pop the balljoints to get the axleshafts disconnected, but once I took the studs out of the mount i was able to tilt it and get them out. Piece of cake.

I'm gonna start a seperate thread with pics of the teardown and I'll link it.

I used my buddys lift. Took about 1-1/2 hours total, having never done it before, and also figured out how to NOT ruin the stub axles, so all we have to do is re-grease them and I can have my AWD back in about an hour or so.

I left the shafts intact as I don't plan on running RWD unless the front diff is toast, than I might think about it. I did change a boot once as I pierced it by accident when changing a control arm and it took me a while to figure out how to get the stub out of the axle shaft as most axleshafts use a c clip and these have a pretty advanced "locking" mechanism. Once you know how to do it it's a snap.

Mike,

Why do you suspect your diff is toast?

Ben

Not sure Ben. I suspect it is, based on our dyno findings, and I was going to troubleshoot it the way Titan seemingly broke theirs? I was gonna run it on the Mustang dyno (unlocked) to see if the front wheels turned the font drum at all, you know just in 1st or 2nd gear. If the wheels turn the rolers, I'm good. There is so little info out there on this Dif.

I just took it apart. Breaking it down into the tailshaft, clutch, front case and ring gear assembly literally took 10 minutes. This thing is really a no brainer and you can replace 50% of the bearings without any advanced tools.

As far as the viscous clutch, it's the only thing I wasn't able to take apart (actually my buddy stopped me) as it is welded shut pesky italians (said made in italy) don't want you to know what's inside. If anyone has a broken one they'd like to donate to science, send it my way and I'll take it apart and post pictures.

As far as testing the functionality of the clutch, there is a detailed procedure in the shop manual that tells you how to go about it without breaking it and it had to be assembled on the car to do so. If you don't have it PM me.
