Best platform for a drag car?

Drag racing is fun, and I am committing myself to obedience to all posted speed laws. Thus I am considering building a drag car. I would be more than happy to break 10 flat and trap 145.

Clearly, the 996 nor my M3 are not the best platforms (there is at least one axle breakage everytime I see these cars run on the drag course).

What is the consensus about either a Supra or a Mustang. Either would be an auto.

The argument for a Supra is that they make huge power and I have a great mechanic (Tommy Banh) close by.

Of course the Mustang is probably the best bang for the buck. The car would have to be street drivable.

Fox body would definitely work. I also love seeing 03 Cobra drag cars with auto swaps. 98-02 Camaro/Firebird if you like nitrous. Grand National drag cars are also really cool. Ah so many choices.

This is true though. I have a (C4 auto) Mustang that runs 11.0 and it's become pretty boring unless you get into bracket racing

breaking into tens is not a problem... a 18g car will do it...
you might as well just do rods and studs and turn up your car... that probably would be cheaper... tuning and integrity of the set up as it stands is very important... boost leaks, vacuum leaks, coils, plugs, turbos need to be checked regularly... etc... it can be done safely if you have the support...

Fox body, if you were adventurous you could run in the 10's on a stock block with total mods and car easily under $12k. Or you could buy one already built and set aside a budget for any thing that needs to be done to the car. Plus if you ran with a mild turbo setup you could run an EBC and have a perfectly streetable car that turns into an animal when you need it too.

Also for the money you spend on a 10 second Supra if your buying an already built car you can run into the 8's with the Mustang and still have money left over. The Mustang is by far the best choice for a dedicated drag car and you still have lots of money left over for Porsche mods!

Fox is cheap and rather easy to build but I would recommend an 03/04 Cobra.

Add auto, a twinscrew, fuel pumps, solid axle with a big/little and run 9s all day long.

I did the below with an 03 Cobra.

Basically took a stock cobra and did the following:
Tune only with stock pullies on the stock eaton, no motor work.
K&N drop in filter
Race seats
Rear seat delete
K member
upgrade tranny input shaft
live axle w/31 splines
Spec stage 3 clutch
exhaust
big/little tire

Ran a 11.01 at 126

Added an upper pulley only, an intake, retune with the above combo and took the car to a 10.84 at 129

Added an upper and lower and retune with aforementioned and ran a 10.69 at 128. At this point I believe I had about $14K in the entire car... including a $3K CM six point roll bar.

03/04 Cobra motors and the T-56s are very reliable and take a beating like the GT1 motor... Supra motors as well. 600 to 700 to the wheels is nothing for the 03/04 Cobra motors. Not to mention they have the same brand pistons as the Porsche GT1 motors do.

Sean I hate to agree with everyone while my car sits in the garrage, but a stock Cobra motor can hold over 1k to the tires. I'd do a turbo kit and a built 6 speed to keep it fun. Toss in the solid axle and it's game on! (trust me I know cause I have one)

A big Kenne Bell like the one I have or a whipple will also net huge power on these cars without sacraficing drivability. The Cobra and the Supra would be my top choices for a Street/Track car, but in the end it's how much do you want to spend and what car better fit's your personality.

Good luck,
_Zac
