Will painting the 996 turbo to a non-oem color reduce the resale value?

Yes. Any full respray hurts resale value. If a full respray necessary it is necessary and there's not much you can do but bite the bullet and have it done.

A good paint job is not a cheap paint job though and you don't want a cheap paint job.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Any paint on the car that didn't get sprayed on at the factory will hurt resale...period, and it's easy to figure out, not that you would try to hide it. Even if it looks good or great, a buyer will still use it as a tool to beat you up, whether he like it or not. And unless you strip the car down to bare metal and paint it the exact same thickness as the factory, anyone can figure out that it has been painted.

I think it depends on the color, how it matches the interior color, and how well it is done.

For example, I'm thinking about re-painting my car pearl white, using a Lambo shade. It would look great with my interior (Boxster Red), and it would be applied better than the OEM paint.

Given all that, I'm sure it would not sell at a discount versus other cars with similar attributes. And it would have appeal as one of a few on the market.

Now, I'm also saying that I don't believe much (any?) of the money put into the paint job itself ($10-15k) would be recoverable.

The only thing is that you have to fully document the job with pictures so a future buyer can besure the repaint wasn't done to cover damages.

If you EVER plan on selling the car, don't do it. It WILL KILL your resale value, I don't care how well it's done.

To do it correctly will be very expensive, as you know. It's a win lose situation. You lose on the expense to do it, you lose on future resale but you win on getting the color you want. I agree that if you're going to keep the car forever, then it doesn't matter but If you think at some point you will let it go, I would say keep it original. Assuming it's original now and in good shape? I'm in the automobile business and a repainted car will always cost you in resale value. Hope this helps.

Only if it is a keeper, and not a reseller.

If you want to explore color changes, I'd suggest you look into wrapping the car - do a search on this, a few that I've seen looked awesome and they should actually protect your paint. When you're ready to sell, you take the wrap off and the paint is as good as it was when you bought it.

For two tone just get a wrap and have them custom cut to the design you want. Cheaper and you can remove it later with no ill effects.

Any non-factory paint will hurt the resale value... period.
