chrome HRE's

Has anyone had experience with chromeing their HRE's. I was thinking of taking them to Wheel Technique to have them chromed. They reccommended to repolish them instead of chroming. For some reason when you chrome HRE's they can weaken the rims. Is this true? Has anyone experienced this?

Why didnt u just get the chrome ones? better still get the high polished ones...

well if its fully polished, send them out to get chrome plated. You might have to remove the Clear coat.

i wouldnt let anyone touch them but HRE factory

msindi Feb 9, 2005 10:13 AM

agree with KSA
I was struggling in deciding chrome vs. polish on my latest set (just ordered) but then settled on high polish

DEETZ Feb 9, 2005 10:16 AM

don't let anyone else touch it besides HRE. I am sending mine back for chrome lips etc :)

We don't send out any of our wheels anymore to be plated because it was nothing but problems. If the mfgr. does not do it, we won't sell it.

My HRE chrome lips sucked.... and to think I paid more for them

The New AVUS wheels I put on have chrome lips with 10 times the quality of HRE's chrome.

If HRE changed who they use to chrome maybe they have improved... I for one would never buy their chrome again.. I had to send two of them back before they even got on my car. They will even tell you that they will not warranty anything that they chrome... So that should tell you the confidence they have in them.

I have never heard that it weakens the rim...

I heard that also. HRE chroming isn't very good. They sub contract it out. Is it true that they can high polish the rim to look like chrome. Thanks for your input guys. I might take a chance and chrome them anyway. Besides, if it doesn't turn out this may give me enough reason to get some new shoes. Does anyone know if the bolt pattern for the 997 and the 996 is the same. Just thinking ahead...

Get high polished with clear coat....

Josh Feb 9, 2005 01:15 PM

Yes, when chrome bonds to metal it actually weakens it, probably not enough to be much of an issue though. Also the chroming of course adds weight. You are far better off polishing them.
For some reason when I think of chrome its on an old car being driven 45mph down the highway by a guy wearing a #3 with his mullet waving in the breeze. ;)

I will never own polished again... way to much work..... Chrome is so easy to clean... If you want light wheels you would not be buying HREs, ect...

And I have been told from Wheel Experts and others that you should not clearcoat polished lips... Centers yes, lips no...

Redlinerobert Feb 9, 2005 02:25 PM

Polished wheels may be more work, but the experience I've had with chorme wheels has not been good - brake dust will eat the chrome finish, especially if you don't clean them well. Polished wheels can always be repolished, and in most cases you can do it yourself.

I would go for polished instead of chrome. If you rash them, you have to pretty much get them rechromed, whereas with polished you can just polish it again.

If you rash them you buy new lips on 3 piece... I know...:p

To each his own... Mine never have much dust on them anyway as this is not a daily driver and I wipe the lips time I came back to my garage....

I opt for ease... Silver, chrome... etc... I'm lazy... :D
