996 Pricing Calculator

996 Pricing Calculator
Pricing comes up pretty frequently despite the fact that I posted a pricing model that accounts for 86% of the variance in sales prices over the last few years. TVR-4 kindly compiled data from 96 sales in the thread below. PeterK and I modeled extensively and now I have put this model into an Excel sheet that anyone can use just by plugging in the characteristics of their car.'
Maybe we can sticky this and prevent a few "help me price this car" threads.

No warranty is provided and I cannot vouch for the model's worth over a long period of time, but it does seem to be performing okay still. At some point the effect of age will ameliorate and it will become worthless.
I should mention that the "chunkiness" of age (a technical term =p) always bothered me, so I made the effect of age in the calculator more continuous by counting the years between 30-Jun of the model year and the date the calculator is used. This helps. Hopefully DAYS360 in Excel is used in the Windows version, too.
Edit: Model Updated to allow for a different sale date from "today." Helps people who want to see what the model would have predicted historically.

Hmm, i plugged in an 03" regular coupe 75,000 miles and it came up as $35,000...either i did it wrong or that is about almost $10,000 off..hehe...but definitley thanks for taking the time to make it...i think maybe its more based on retail value

Mileage plays a big role, about 27 cents per mile. Obviously the relationship flattens out after a while, so that once you get a ton of miles the net effect on price probably goes away, but because there were so few transactions with 60, 70, 80k miles, we don't really know how that shook out.
I'd stick to the following ranges for pricing: 0-60k miles

Pricing seems to come out low. I plugged in my numbers for my 2001 996tt that bought in May with 49k miles and it came out with $32K. I wish I could have negotiated that price for my car. I have yet to see an '01 996tt priced that low that didn't have 90k+ miles on it. There are also probably a couple other big factors that play into pricing than just those. Definitely factor in the manual vs. tiptronic tranny (manuals comand a premium over tip). All that said, it's a neat spreadsheet and obviously took some time to work out the statistics. Very neat.

Yeah, there are other explanatory variables, but we didn't collect them in that thread. It would have been really interesting to see the effects of transmission and color.
All I can say is that the predicted price is what you'd get if you were to pick through that thread and do an analysis of the sales prices there, adjusting for additional age (which probably flattens out over time, too, rendering the model useless afterwards).
Take it for what it's worth!

Wow, the calc makes me feel great about my purchase. Even when I adjust for economy (crisis) although I dont think it still applies today, its only $5k below my purchase price and does not take into account all of the aftermarket goodies included. If I take the crisis out of the equation, I feel like I scored!!
