Poping outta second....
Poping outta second....
Well I finally have the dreaded my car is popping outta second gear problem... All of a sudden happened to me one day, which I thought nothing of untill it happened 2 more times in the next couple of days.... Car is going to Braman for some EXCELENT service early next week to see whats going on. As expected I was told if it is reproduced the would most likely install a BRAND NEW tranny as Porsche won't let them crack open 996TT tranny's... I guess thats kinda cool to get a new tranny, but a major PITA... O well I know Braman will take care of me as always, they are the BEST (esp. Dave E. and Bucky!!)!!
Evan
PS- For whoever else has had this happen, did you get a new tranny or what??

yep got a new tranny and its better then the ones in MY2001/2002. It's not so much they don't like cracking open trannys because they will to inspect yours... but they have complete trannys in crates in NA and individual gears and spacers need to come from Germany and it is a pain for both you and the dealer. Be glad it happen during warrenty. These things cost about $13K installed. Mine happen last year. Good luck.

PS- Ron, of course

Brian at Carlsen opened mine to inspect the gear and noticed the main gear shaft was hosed. Thus a new tranny was required. Regardless getting a new tranny will be nice. If you have anywhere from 15-20K miles on the tranny you should change it out but put in a Stage 2 with a lightweight flywheel. Talk about grabbing a gear at high RPMs.
That's different from what I was told. My car was at the dealer for three days before a decision was made by PCNA. To repair it, they would have had to assemble parts from several different locations, and it would have taken a couple of weeks. So they put a new transmission in. While they were doing it, I had them install the OEM SSK. No problems since.

When I had the 2nd gear problem, The Collection elected to rebuild (rather than replace) my transmission and kept my car for 5 weeks. They said PCNA no longer replaced transmissions for the 2nd gear problem.
Then to add injury to insult, they had a monkey use a rotary buffer and wool cutting pad to wax* my paint before they gave me my car back.

Thats odd, because I have heard that they are not supposed to open 996TT tranny's!! I will for sure do a clutch and flywheel if the tranny comes out!! I have 23,000 mlies on mine, but no signs of clutch slippage yet (knock on wood)

Evan,
I am wondering how your problem started ie gradually or all of a sudden. My shifter has begun to jump out of second with any slight touch or forward movement. It hasn't taken to jumping out by itself. I thought before this might be an adjustment needed because I have a short shifter installed. This isn't a big problem but I fear it might be the start of a bigger problem. Any thoughts?

I am not sure where all these numbers are coming from. Parts are no where near as expensive as being quoted. First gear is the most expensive at about $1,500. The others are $400. to $600 per gear. Steel syncro's to the best of my memory were a few hundred dollars per syncro. A tranny can be pulled and reinstalled in about four hours. The labor to break it down and re assemble is under 2K.
I had this done a few times. The best person period on tranny's is a guy by the name of Brian Copan.
If you are popping out of gear it is probably a syncro. If you are looking for any parts, let me know. I have a complete extra set of gears and syncro's.
One of the worst things you can do to a syncro is to drive around with your hand resting on the shifter. This wears on the syncro.

5 weeks?! They just want to charge the factory for the excessive and unnecessary labor.
Feel sorry for u FL folks.
There is only ONE BEST. Carlsen.
