Pressure Testing Car from Turbo intake....cold side of turbo leaking air (videos)

I pressure tested my car this weekend after I got the 997.2 intercooler replaced (end tank leaking)...thank you Markski for all the tech support!!

I was unable to get the car to hold its pressure, and notice a few small leaks (MAF and diverter valve) and a large leak at the TB. Luckily tightening the clamp around the TB fixed the issue. The car would still not hold pressure and after checking everywhere I notice a lot of air is leaking out of the turbo themselves (also, I know the air goes into the cylinders so some leakage can not be avoided).

I am putting compressed air into the turbo air inlets (which usually receive non-compressed air), so this might not be an issue. I just though these turbos would have came sealed on the cold side as well for $5k.

Thanks!

Ben,
I smoke test then psi test only to make sure what ever hose connections will not blow off.. Some leakage is acceptable. Some guys even drill small holes were oil blow by pools up. Turbo's do have O-rings not sure why they are leaking by that much.

If they didn't use threadlocker on the bolts of the compressor housing it will leak.. that's if thats where it's coming from... some leakage is Ok but would be nice if it would seal up...
I thought a while back there was a thread about this...

It wasn't leaking around the bolt holes. On one turbo there was a small focal leak but with a pretty strong jetting leak. The other was leaking the entire circumference of the housing cover plate around the seal. Obviously there is usually a vacuum at this location. I assume now that tial doesn't use thread lock? If this were the case a large percentage of turbos would leak and no one would be able to pressure test correctly without having their out of the box turbos pulled apart and seals redone. I don't believe it, if this were common people trying to pressure test would go nuts and it would be all over the board

I have see these leaks posted before. The area that is leaking is not under vacuum, only the inlet would be under a vacuum (many will say no part of the turbo is under a vacuum). If you take the snail off and lube the O-ring with a petroleum grease and re install it most likely will stop leaking. My experience is that the O-ring gets twisted up during the install and makes it leak.

Leaks at the backplate are completely normal

Are factory turbos sealed?

If not...the real way (for most people) to pressure test their cars would be from the lower boost hose since the turbos leak...

nope, nor are most of the other OEM turbos, the only turbos I know of that completely seal (because RTV is used and if you ever needed to get it apart it's a PAIN) are IHI OEM units

I don't see a problem with turbos leaking such a little quantity of air.....espetially big turbos. I would say those leaks are orders of magnitude smaller than the air flowed by the compressor at those pressures...

Imo.
