What's a good time at Laguna Seca with our cars?

I was there on Tuesday of this week, and my best time was 1:46 42'
The car has KWV3s, Pagid pads, Pilot sport cup tires. Looking for perspective or times from others with comparable set-ups.

Thanks

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but do recall that a pro (Johannes Van Overbeek iirc) driven 997 GT2 RS did something like a 1:35 lap there as covered by Excellence magazine. This is off the top of my head so may not be 100% accurate though. I'd say a 1:46 is moving right around for a 996TT driven by a mere mortal (please correct me if you're not one of those!).

Great time, that was moving! I had several 1.51s last time I was out but had scorched/warped my brakes-rotors so only had a few hot laps. I was running PSS9 and Cups.

Do you make it out to Thunderhill or Infineon? If so any comparable times to share?

Keep it up- love these turbos at the track!

Glad to hear this is a pretty good time! - here is a video I took. Sorry it is so shaky but I need to buy a better mount.

Last time I was at Laguna I boiled my fluid and had no brakes at the end of the front straight. This time things were OK using Motul brake fliud AND being very disciplined about cooling the brakes.

I have only been once to Thunderhill but plan to go there a couple of time next year. I haven't made it to Infineon but have heard it is intimidating because of all the walls.

Hope to see you out there - look for the silver turbo with terracota interior.

I was at Infineon for the first time earlier this year and loved it. I now know what folks mean when they say it's a more "technical" track. There aren't the long straight sections between turns to adjust your line and entry into the next turn. It's more of a turn after turn type of track. And the carousel section near the back of the track is a blast (just floor it!). There are definitely more walls and barriers -- but I didn't find it that intimidating and just took it a little easier through those sections (you definitely don't want to swing wide on that last turn :)).

I do it in very high 120's when I am fast on my motorcycle and low to mid 130's when I am playing around. Fastest street car times are are low to mid 130's as seen by web site above.

Looks like a standard Carrera is capable of a 1:45 in the right hands according to that link. That must be really getting it done in that car!

muker Nov 27, 2011 01:29 PM

Thanks for the link to the fastest laps site.

Given a 997 GT3 can do it in under 1:40, anything within 2-3 secs of that in a 996T would be pretty amazing. I gotta find 3 secs somewhere!
997 GT3 Laguna Seca 1:39.52 15/60

As per the site, the 997 Turbos do it in 138-140 range. Is there a consensus that the 997 is faster than the 996? I assume they would be given they have more power etc but also read that the handling was not as balanced.

heavychevy Nov 28, 2011 07:50 AM

The only thing track wise the 997 TT is better at than the 996 TT is power. The 996 TT seems more driver friendly in terms of lap times. All it's lacking relatively is power.

Randy Pobst (professional driver) ran that 1:38 in the 997 Turbo, so don't assume it will be an easy task in a similar car.

I know that the OP wanted times by a 996TT, but here are some times by some new cars in the hands of Randy Pobst done by Motor Trend in their Hot Laps I posted this on another thread so I am sure some have seen it, but they are fun to watch on youtube
The following are the fastest lap times for each vehicle:

~ Lotus Evola S ------------ 345 HP - 1 minute 42.49 seconds

~ Ford Boss Mustang 302 - 444 HP - 1 minute 41.06 seconds

~ Mercedes SLS AMG ------ 563 HP - 1minute 38.82 seconds

~ Porsche 911 GT3 RS ----- 450 HP - 1 minute 36.77 seconds

~ Audi R8 GT --------------- 560 HP - 1 minute 36.39 seconds

~ Lexus LFA ----------------- 552 HP - 1 minute 36.39 seconds

~ Nissan GT-R -------------- 530 HP - 1 minute 36.35 seconds

~ Ferrari Italia 458 --------- 557 HP - 1 minute 36.22 seconds

~ Corvette Z06, with Z07 -- 505 HP - 1 minute 34.43 seconds

Thanks for the times -

Has anyone ever seen an "official" fastest time by a street 996TT at Laguna?

REVS11 Nov 29, 2011 11:53 AM

Not sure reg TT but I think 80shilling ran his GT2 there a few times and posted some vids, maybe some other 6speed drivers posted in his track day thread(s).

Boostin Dec 2, 2011 11:41 AM

I ran a high 1:40 last time I was out there but only got a couple of laps in before my voltage regulator decided to go. My car is pretty modded (motons, full heim / monoball links, sways, brembos, umw k16/k24s with tune, europipe, nt01s, etc).

I believe that 80schilling was running 1:37s IIRC with JRZs, full link setup, and hoosiers in his GT2.

1:45s are definitely respectable with minimal mods on street tires.
