Have you tried Willow Springs as an alternate? It's about an hour from Buttonwillow and is also a fun track.

For us Norcal guys, it only take 2.5-3 hours to get to Buttonwillow and we all know that track;) It's super safe without walls etc.... and a good pleace I think.
