creaking in the front end when turning steering wheel??

all of a sudden my front end has developed a creak when you turn the wheel??? Seems to be coming from the passenger side.
Ive done a search but it doesnt seem to be a lot of info on this.
the suspension is bone stock minus some h&r lowing springs.
Has anybody else had this problem? Will I damage anything driving it to work till I can get underneath it?
Thanks guys

I have the same thing!!!! Mine comes and goes. I have the same suspension set up. My creaking seems to come from the drivers side. I haven't heard it in a while but I've heard it creak over some big bumps recently.

Most likely dry or worn upper Strut mount bearing making noise, particularly at low speed (clunking and creaking). Try to spray some lubricant into the mount from underside (3,4,5) see if that helps, otherwise service the mount. On other cars you can get the bearing plates/bearings, on the Porsche you may have to replace the whole mount.

Here's a description of what it does,

i'm not sure if this describes the sound you're talking about, but mine "creaks" at full lock either direction at low speed. never at speed or in driving conditions, only low speed hard turns. it's the "springs" binding, is all i can surmise. h&r sport springs. new or old. doesn't matter. still binds and "creaks".

so, unless you're talking about a sound related to low pentosin levels or something?? that's more like a "screeching whine".. but you know your car better than that.. so probably not.

There seems to be a rash of posts on similar problems, VAGscum seems to have resolved his issues.

it just seems odd to me, as i have had the lowering springs for three years of daily driving and then all of a sudden one fails? And I also have just 30k on the clock.
its more of a creaking/squeaking sound than a clunk. But I did hear some spring typr rattle a couple of drives earlier, it sounded similar to a spring not fully seated but only heard it over big bumps.
does any of this sound familiar?
And i appreciate the help.

Well I tried the wd40 trick, it did quite it up. At this point the car was cool as well so when I get home from work tomorrow I will update as its 35 miles round trip.

Danyol 04-23-2012 08:56 PM

WD40 is more of a solvent than a lubricant, try some spray lithium grease.

gearhead 04-23-2012 09:58 PM

Will do.

Well it's definetly back, seems like a soon as it gets warmed up it starts. I don't hear it a highway speed, mostly at low speed when I turn the wheel or come of the gas and press the brake(when the weight transfers). So it's not just steering the wheel making the sound, it's also happens when weight is transferred from front to back when switching going from the gas pedal to the brake.
To guys who have switched there bearing, does this sound right?

Fallbangskid 04-24-2012 08:53 AM

I installed H&R springs and as soon as I did, I got that noise. I removed them and used the M030 ROW springs and I'm back to normal....

In my application, my car didn't like the H&R Springs.

There is a company I belive called TC design in CA that sells a thin roller bearing that sits under the spring. It keeps the spring from binding. Added them when I converted to PSS9's. No squeaks since.

Update, for the past couple of long drives it's been raining and guess what? No sound. So I'm assuming it's the bearing and a lubrication issue. Vagscum or anybody else confirm that this is the bearing as my symptoms are the same as there's were? So I can order it then tear it apart to not have any down time as this is my only car.

Let's us now how it goes, I'm having the same problem with my car. Thanks.

ttpopo 04-28-2012 05:29 PM

i have this issue too and I have PSS9s. It definitely seems to come and go, but has been worse lately - to the point that the pass front end creaks at low speeeds over bumps etc
