BADLY NEEDED: 996 Turbo motor mount technical info
Hi all,
I have a problem with a motor mount that I need to get more technical data on and I can't find it in my parts or repair manuals. Basically I need to find the info on the parts that attach to the bottom of the bolt that comes out of the square aluminum sleeve that's attached to the engine after the bolt comes out of the motor mount and then through the sleeve.
I'm looking for the parts numbers that attached to the end of the bolt that comes from the engine mount through the square aluminum sleeve. I'd also love to see photos of what this area look like on a stock 996 Turbo. This is right inside where the cat attaches to the header but is about 6" higher up in the engine bay above that.

I'd just replace the entire mount with either the 964RS mounts from Suncoast or the semi solid mounts from several after market companies. The stock fluid filled mount have too much give in them.

I don't understand how that nut alone with no washer is sufficient to hold the engine when it's the most highly vibrational component in the car. I would expect a locking washer at least. However this nut fits over the part above it which is a square aluminum channel so I don't understand that relationship either.
I looked at this but due to financial restrictions didn't do it. My stock mounts were ok. I went with upgraded 997 tranny mounts though. My problem isn't the mounts as they seem to be fine at this point, but since my car is more of a track car and weekend driver I'll be upgrading to different engine mounts at some point. The Torque Solutions mounts look like a great option too.

It is exactly that way. A simple nut on a long threaded shaft M12 coming out of the mount and fitting on the square hole on the engine carrier. The torqued for these two nuts is 63 foot pounds!! (page 1182 of the repair manual) Somebody forgot to torque these two nuts or the threads are damaged which would surprise me...

The threads are fine. I didn't have torque figures at the track yesterday but have been wrenching a long time so I though 70 foot pounds was about right for a 12mm on an engine component. I'm glad to know I was almost correct. I erred on the side of going a little heavier than lighter on the torque just to be sure.
Has anybody ever heard of these coming loose? I've been a Porsche guy for a long time and active forum member on many sites and I've never heard of these coming loose ever. I can only assume it was a case of somebody not torquing them.

Same here. I've never heard of this happening before. I have lowered the engine before for diverter valves replacement and also remove the engine for coolant pipes welding and I have replaced those nuts for new ones at the engine reinstallation's ($1.38 at Sonnen)....But they never came loose....

May be the designer of your new motor mount got a different torque for the mount to the engine carrier but for a OEM part here's a picture of the repair manual with the proper torque:

excellent, thanks. for the wevo semi's they do recommend 60 and 18 ft lbs..in your estimation.. is that difference of 3ft lbs significant? i will go with the mfg's numbers either way.. but these are about as important as bolts and nuts get on this car, i figure. again.. thanks for the info.
