Thanks for the info guys. For those who had them welded, how strong was glue at that time? Was there significant degradation? (Thomapa1 noted there was)

If you have pinning done well, I think it will easily be a 10-15 year fix! If that is temporary, then I am ok with that! By then, the engine will be out for something else anyway and things can be checked, etc.

Either way, it is a must do for these cars at this point. Just glad I was in town when it happened. It was only list of things to do this year, but failure beat me to it!

How long did they last and did the installer take extra measures?

My tech pinned with o-ring washer, locktite, and expoxy on top. Then epoxyed around the pipe as well.

Like I said, if it is done right, I don't see why it would not be a 10 year fix. I have full confidence in my repair and if they do leak, they have a lot to get through first!

Then you have the guys who have to pull their engine a 2nd time for a pin-hole leak in a weld. I think technique and care is just as important as method.

Anyway, sounds like your shop has a handle on it. We've just made the decision around here (recently) that pinning isnt the proper solution.
If you have a good welder that knows what he is doing, then welding is the way to go. I did pinning for many reasons, but those are variables that others may not have to deal with...

agreed. pinning will simply stop the fitting from popping out. it will not stop the glue from drying up and letting coolant leak by the fitting. i dont see why people would not weld if motor is out of the car. for those worried about pin sized leaks, you fill the motor with water and pressurize i to test it before reinstalling into the car. do it once and do it right.
