Perfect 1st to 2nd shift?

So I find it a bit difficult to shift from 1st to 2nd smoothly at a cruising pace. It seems like it takes a while for the RPMs to match up. I say about 50% of the time I get a really smooth shift, but the other 50% are a bit jerky. Any suggestions?

The method I use now is to hold it at the engagement point for a bit and then slowly release off with gas. It works about half the time like I said. Thanks!

My 1st to 2nd shifts are garbage too - I feel like I "knuckle it" into 2nd and it just isn't smooth. I'm about to switch to the 997 shifter in hopes that it is a bit better. Glad I'm not the only one.

Yea it's strange, I drive the 997 smooth as butter from 1st to 2nd, but I just can't quite get the feel for the 996

All of my other shifts are great, smooth as could be. What's your technique for 1-2?

I've never thought about it as I did not notice any issue. Full throttle is different from every day cruising. My WOT shift is as quick as possible and is smooth along with a quick clutch motion. Everyday traffic driving, I shift smoothly at around 3000 and slowly let out the clutch while slowly and gradually applying throttle.

Its the gear ratio its to big 1st to 2nd.. Try to get out of 1st quicker, as in a lower rpm. That may help you out.

Ajs76 11-12-2012 02:34 AM

I find there are two options. 1) Get out of 1st gear sooner like Tim941NYC said. Option 2 is rev it to like 4k and then shift. The key is not to gun it to 4k. give yourself like half throttle and don't add any more throttle. As that level of throttle starts to not yield anymore RPMs you can usualy shift pretty quickly and smoothly into 2nd.

I know it sounds werid, but if I try to hurry the shift while the car was still accelerating in 1st then it just feels clunky.

Yep...get outa first as soon as you get in it...useless gear...

Porsche transmissions have always been like this from 1st to 2nd, although the newer cars are better. I always 2 part my shifts, with a little pause in neutral, seems to help. I usually shift at 4,000 rpm going to second. One thing is for sure, there is no jamming gears in a 911 like you could in a Corvette, otherwise you better have a few spare trannys laying around.

i shift @3k get into 2nd asap. "normal" driving obviously.

Same as above- get out early. The standard 997 shifter did help a lot. The 996 shifter was tough work in 1/2. Fun DIY as well.

i know this problem...dont like to show a wrong route but what i have learned is...

75throttlebody a little better, intake pipes a little better, y pipe a little better.. with that 3 steps my car was way better at throttle responsonse in every situation ...lwfw helps a lot (but a lot noises a idle)....some power modification are positiv for driveability and reduce lag at the tb

I went out and tried this, fixed the jerkiness instantly! The shift feels easier too so I guess it's important to let the synchros take their time then. I'm still used to my last car (Subi STi) which I just beat on non-stop lol.

I really do not understand why porsche used such a low first gear. If someone knows please inform me.

As Tim said the 996tt goes from 3.82 1st to 2.05 2nd. Thats a big change.
The 997tt is 3.82 to 2.14, the gt2 goes from 3.15 to 1.89.

Has anyone ever tried to use a gt2 3.15 first gear?
