clutch rattle?

I'm looking at a 2004 turbo with about 60K, and an newly replaced clutch. The clutch seems to work fine but there is a slight rattle when the engine is running. It doesn't change when engaging or disengaging. The owner says that this is common on high performance clutches.

Is that right?

it's *possible* he's talking about a lightweight flywheel type of rattle which are often switched out with non oem clutch parts/upgraded clutch on modded turbo's. eg.. you probably would't have done a lwfw without a bunch of other stuff. except, that ( lwfw chatter/rattle ) should only really be present at idle(?).. then there's the ims "rattle".. never mind. was my best *guess*.

LWFW rattle only happens when at idle with the clutch out in neutral. If it's rattling all the time, then probably an issue.

ha ha! Thanks! Business has been crazy. Got out of one and moved to Colorado! I'm a workaholic so trying to keep things simple for a long as possible!

How's the car been treating you? Haven't put many miles on mine for a while.

That's not the clutch, it's the intermediate shaft. 996TTs rattle - some more than others. It is normal. Both of my Turbos have had a level of rattle at idle.

If it was the clutch it would stop when the pedal is depressed.

Thanks guys. Very helpful. Notice the "?" after the "clutch rattle". I can't be sure it is from the clutch, because my experience with clutch noises is that a noise in the clutch usually changes - either louder or softer - when the clutch pedal is depressed, but it changes. No change in noise here, that's what made me question the clutch. IMS bearing...ouch! I assume this engine has the same crappy design as the non-turbo. If I remember from other threads, the 2004 has a design change that requires splitting the block it goes.

Good news is that you are wrong. The Turbo doesn't have the same IMS issues at all as the NA 996s but they still have an intermediate shaft and it tends to rattle a bit.
