what is this stuff???

This black insulation material? Has been coming out if myA/C vents. Driving me crazy. What should I do??

ECS Tuning - Porsche 04-25-2013 09:26 AM

It's usually the foam around the joints and the flapper doors (to keep them from rattling).

FLpaindoc 04-25-2013 05:56 PM

How do I fix it??

I have the same problem which started in January after using the defroster. From what Ive read, the whole dash needs to come out to remove the existing material and replace it.

I now have a terrible rattle coming from the defroster area, so much so, that I havent driven her lately. Theres lots of info about this problem if you search rennlist and renntech.

To bad you arent closer as we could have had a double dash removal day with lots of beer and bloody knuckles.

Typical old car problem. The foam degrades over time.

I don't have this problem but was curious if you could suck it out with a shop vac or use compressed air to blow it all out?

FLpaindoc 05-03-2013 07:13 AM

I'll try that. thank for the responses I'll let you know

The dash does not need to come out. You can easily remove the side vents on the dash and clean them out. THe center vents can be removed easily as well.
I had them all out when I was changing my trim out. I vacuumed most of the foam out. Most of it is close to the vent where it makes the seal. If they have ever been removed for any reason, then they will deteriorate even quicker.

mmm635 I got the loose foam out, but the defroster blend door rattles. Any suggestions? Also, thanks for all the help last year with the coil overs, they worked out great!!!

Scott, how exactly did you remove all the foam ?
I have the same problem and when it falls to the beige carpet, it leaves a stubborn black mark.

03 996tt 05-05-2013 07:42 AM

I ran the ac on high for half an hour then used a pick and shop vac to get all the pieces out. I cycled between defroster, vents, and floor. Im sure there will still be little pieces every now and then, but from what I vacuumed out, Im sure I got most of it.

I made sure to go from recirculation to fresh and through all the different blend settings to get all the loose pieces moving.

Sounds good. I'll try that next weekend.
