I bought my 01 a year ago for 40 with 63k on it. I was thinking of selling it, but looked at some other prices right now. Saw a 2003 with 24k miles for 42500?! And a lot of similar cars in the same range...ugh

991 turbos happened

Winter happened.

Also, you don't know the full story behind the 2003. Maybe it's got a shady carfax. Maybe it needs $x,xxx worth of maintenance. Hopefully...

It has been my experience, over the last two years, that the prices typically fall during the winter and start to climb during the spring/summer. Additionally, many dealers try to clear their stock during the Fall/winter.

New guy to this forum. Decided to finally chime in since I'm thinking I wanna get a 996 Turbo. Found one in the region asking $42,900 for an 01 manual with 23k. Assuming it's a clean car, what is it worth? Do I dare offer $39K assuming it passes a PPI? Prices are all over the place on these cars.

yeah i would def agree with everyone that you overpaid.

i doubt youll lose too much on the resale unless you put a lot of miles on in this past year

Do a PPi and find out what it needs, if it needs anything. Start at $35k and go up slowly. :)

These points are simply my opinion....

Remember that high mile cars are still values in the high 30's vs. a new 991 turbo which will cost you $200k after tax. That's not even close to being a factor in my opinion.


Second...

Pay to play guys. Pay to play. Each year that passes, brings a new dynamic to values. My bet is special cars will continue to command high values where higher mile/less exciting cars will set the middle bar.

I think that is right- pay to play, like anything else that is any fun. As some others have pointed throughout the forum, a well sorted car with slightly more miles is worth its PPI in gold. Alternatively, a great "deal" could cost exponentially more long-term.

While $40k for a car with 60k miles may not be the best deal, it is not necessarily overpaid if its in super condition yada yada yada.... If you paid $40 and it needs new turbos and has no oil in it, you got smoked.

Speaking of expensive, I asked my wife yesterday, " Will you love me when I'm
old and grey?" and she said, " Well, don't I ?"

I also agree that sports car prices tend to be softer during winter months.

Additionally, it is very difficult to do direct comparisons between these Turbos as they can be optioned out so differently.

IIRC, I paid $48k for an '01 with ~32k miles back in April of 2010. Sounds high as at that time, I could also pick up other '01 Turbos with similar mileage for about $40k flat. However, my car happened to be a white/black Turbo (rare and the exact color combo I was after) with Aerokit, and full carbon interior. Additionally, it had a flash, exhaust, coilovers, and other aftermarket goodies. All things that I would have done had I picked up a bone stock Turbo. So to me personally, I made out ok on the deal.

I am sure I can pick up a Turbo even cheaper today, but then I would have been deprived of the joy of driving this car for the past 3 years. To me, the past 3 years easily out weights few thousand dollars in depreciation.
