This site seemed to have a few ideas...

Turn the nozzle upside down. There are times when mine stops at 3/4's full and I simply turn the nozzle upside down to fill the rest.

When I insert the nozzle I always have to tip it up or it stops every time.
Put the nozzle in, lift it about a few inches and start pumping.
It may just work.

there is are a few post on this. most usually jump straight to blameing the carbon canister. i had same problem year or so ago. i took the plastic extension (6-10") off my 2 gallon gas can and took it to the gas station with me. i put it on the nozzle to extend the reach and pumped away. never had a problem since.

+1. Been doing it that way since I bought the car.

I bought a ring (oem part) that clips on the filler opening for my 997tt. I would think it fits the 996tt as well? I would flip the nozzle upside down before getting the ring.

I literally changed gas stations to one that would allow me to fill the car.

Wait, what is the OEM ring. Do you have a picture or a part number?

The Rennlist thread is good and there are a couple on 6speed (search is your friend). I always turn the pump handle to 9-o'clock position and it fills every time.

i also have this issue and also orient the nozzle to 3 o'clock and hold it ( pita ) but if i attempt to fill beyond the first auto shutoff, i have massive spillage which i have to believe is the canister(?) being flooded so i no longer go for the 2nd squeeze, but am still just at "full" using this method. it's a peculiarity but one not worth chasing down. yet.

New to me 996 too. No problems with the fill but I cannot add ANY fuel after it trips. It will spill over for sure. But my car does go to the full mark also.

easy fix. i took off the cap for the gas tank and disconnected the top breather. the car filled up, and i put it back on. will take it to my guy and have him fix the air breather hose so i don't have to do this each time i fill up...

jpflip Jan 10, 2014 12:40 PM

Hum... that's interesting! This is something to look at in the future. Of course if the air cannot come out the fuel won't go in!!! thanks for sharing!
