Who's tried to run a stock clutch on 16 billets?
 

Thinking of doing the markski 16billet upgrade which I think is 540 hp. I'm tuned now and the clutch holds perfect for roll type stuff. No launching. Will the newer turbos just fry this clutch?

Turbos don't fry clutch, its ALL you and your foot :)
That said, all clutches will "fry" depending on driver. Stock should hold while you find that sweet spot between launch and the smell of disc burning

Ya, car is never launched. Just jump all over it on a roll. It's my daily driver. The vette is for beating ass

The short answer is yes...one good dyno pull and your clutch will be gone, you do not need to launch, the first real pull you do on the street you will likely kill it.

other guys have had their clutches fail on dyno's pulls, the billet 16 produces a TON of TQ..

replace it before and keep your stock unit...or destroy it and replace it later

I don't have billet 16's but i have Garrett GT 28/64 turbos. I believe our power numbers will be similar.

My car made 526whp and 515wtq on a 91 octane tune. I believe your car will make a little more bottom end and mine will make a little more top end.

My car has approximately 65,000 miles on the original clutch and approximately 35,000 miles at the above power levels.

A drag strip launch with raised revs and a clutch dump are not possible, but a street type launch off idle is fine.

A roll from any gear is fine, but a quick shift from 3rd to 4th will cause clutch slip. Basically you need to make sure the clutch is completely engaged before you start getting on the gas after a shift.

Basically it's manageable, but borderline.

Change the clutch it will fry quickly.

The stock clutch is rated to ~ 525ft/lbs from my sources at SACHS.

My clutch went with just stock k24 1.2 bars.

I had OEM clutch with K16 Billets + injectors ... no problems.

shouldn't k16 billets be over 525 tq or is it RIGHT there...

on my 335 with 500whp the clutch would start to slip in 4th gear, I could still get around just fine, just BEATING on it wouldn't suffice. I drove like that for a few more weeks before I got fed up and orders a south bend. You could always dial back the power (have your tuner do this) or just pony up and buy the clutch.

I can't imagine spending the money on power mods and then not being able to use them due to clutch slip.... just get a clutch.

I would like to interject with some perspective. It all depends on the kind of driving you do. How much does your driving technique alone effect clutch wear. Without that baseline, the answers will be all over the place. Most people abuse clutches more than they admit or realize.

That being said I have 30k miles of EPL K16 flash and everybody told me to expect to buy a clutch. I am at 92k on factory clutch. I do not launch. And I only slip the clutch from a stop a little. Otherwise it is off/on smoothly and quickly. My driving is not typical. Not is it perfect.

These results don't seem typical... and I think the biggest savior of your clutch is the lack of launch. Launch kills clutches... Ever look at that gauge in a Gallardo... enough to make you cringe, watching your clutch life just slip away with every launch...

The ultimate test for holding power,, as I found out in the past with stock clutch in the beginning of mods, is coming off the line hard and then power shifting to 2nd..
Even though my clutch slipped there,,It never did from any roll ons with full boost in 1 to 5 [never tried 6th] OR never did it letting off gas when shifting gears..

I'd like to think I'm a damn good driver, and know about the mechanics of things. I don't downshift at every stop like some (drives me nuts). And if I do I rev match. The car sees WOT from 2nd gear on. I do shift fast and hard, but I don't no lift either. It's mainly a daily driver that likes to go 180mph to go get milk. Lol. The reason I ask is because the car got a new clutch just 30k miles ago. I also don't run sticky tires either. I tried to launch it once and the clutch did spin, but every where else it's solid as a rock on a 1.1 bar. So I would imagine I'm making 430ish. It's still awd and never really cared to go find a awd Dyno. Getting a new clutch isn't a huge deal, but I just don't want to deal with the work yet.
