Mind sharing how you removed and re-installed the washer buttons?
On the 1st time that I did this job I extended the buttons and then wedged in some styrofoam spacers to hold them out while I sanded.
I'll have to check the system I used.......must not have been 3M cuz after 5-6 months much of the rash is coming back.
Just my opin but it is a significant amount of work.....and guess I'd pay someone if there was a local.....but there is not.
I would caution against that kit. The initial sanding grit isn't aggressive enough for a lot of our headlights and you have to do it by hand, which also makes it harder to get the factory coating off.

I did and it barely made a difference in removing the factory coating. The kit I had started with 1,000 grit (which wasn't enough). Is that what you started with?

The 3M kit starts with 500 grit.

The kit you used should work fine if your factory coating isn't starting to break down. My coating was starting to crack, which meant it needed to be removed.
Just returned from the Mammoth High Sierra Tour at Mammoth Lakes Ca. During line up, was parked next to a pristine 996GT3 with very clear lenses. My grungy, yellowed lights made my car look like a wrecker, lenses were as bad if not worse then Steve's original pics.
So I decided that when I got home, I would remedy the situation
Been following this thread since Steve posted. Great information. I wanted to post what I did, after finding this on the web:
This guy is a professional detailer and I must say, I am very happy with the results.
The clear on the Porsche is very thick. Started wtih 220 wet or dry, then 400 and 600, all dry sanded. the went to 1000 wet, 1500 wet and finally 2000 wet. Finished with a mechanical cutting compound and finally a foam pad and polishing compound. Took about 45 minutes per side.
Used a spray on clearcoat with built in UV protection, Upol #1 clear. Very happy with the results
