996T will make a comeback... the time is near...
997 and 996T are swimming in the same price bracket... just doesn't make sense to me, so that got me thinking... as soon as the novelty of the 997 wears off, there will be a shift, as a good portion of P-car buyers will start to realize that for their money, the used 996T is the current performance car deal of the life time.
Hell, used '01 prices are within spit'n distance of new M3's and 993C2S', and are competing with FI M3's... 993T's cost more (yes, we all know it was the last OIL cooled Turbo).
Not knocking any of the cars listed... just thinking that the slide is near end. The good days will be here again, and the recent miserable residual avalanche has run its course. Now, back to your regularly scheduled program...

Agreed. I just bought a 996tt cab with 1200 miles for much less than a lightly optioned 997 cab.
If I was in the market for a coupe, I can't imagine getting a 997 instead of a 996tt.

Jamie: yup... that's exactly my thought...
Justin: I was thinking, with basic-content moderate-mileage 996T's going for high 60's to low 70's, how much lower can it go...
$50k is a strong price point for sports cars... tons of them at around that price and lower. Then, options start to dwindle. So, someone looking to spend $50~55k on say an M3 may easily consider a Turbo for an extra ~15k.
So, what's a $70K 996T competing with... new Boxster S, used 997, C6 Z06, Cayman S, Maserati, new/used 6-series, etc... bottom end prices should stablize at around $70k. Anyways, that's just my speculation as to where the used prices will be prop'd up... not that any of it matters when I'm actually out enjoying the car!

Stephen,
I think you are exactly right. What else would you want for 70K. Just chip a TT with an exhaust and this f#&^er will FLY. What I like best about mine is it does not care if you drive it hard. Who knows what the bottom is but I think 60k +/- for mid to higher mileage cars is about it. Low miles and good options (mods) can only help you. If I knew before what I know now I would have waited on my 01 and gotten a modded 02 for less money. The guy on this board with the modded silver TT for about 81-82 has the exact car I would have bought. It is badd ***. My PSI 480 chipped car keeps smiles on my face every time I drive it. Only have 11,500 miles on an optioned out 01 and still lovin it.

I doubt the prices will recover, the market seems flooded with used 996tt's. Plus everything seems to be a in kind of limbo until the 997 GT3 and Turbo hit the streets and that should push the value of the newer model 996tt's down.

Not sure if I was clear enough in my initial post, but my point was that the big drop in depreciation has already taken place... not that it would recover. '01 Turbo prices aren't going to go much lower without bumping into people want to in. Just my $.02...

Dreamers. The 996 of any type is a thing of the past. There are a lot of them out there. When you go to a dealer, they have a lot of 996s (including turbos) on the lot that are NOT moving. The 997s are sold before they are cleaned up for the showroom.
It is okay to dream as long as you know you are dreaming.
