03 X50 Tranny Question

Hi,

My 03 recently wouldn't get out of 1st gear.
Had it towed to my indy and took a look at the linkage...no problems there.
He stated that the problem could be in the shift mechanism that sits on top of the tranny...either or tranny is coming out.
He also stated that since the tranny is coming out that they would split the case and put new synchro's in etc and fix the first gear along with a clutch inspection/ potential replace since the tranny is coming out.

Does this sound kosher?
There is no question that the 1st gear will not come out.
Just wanted some validation. I have never abused the car, nor tracked it...just a little weird I am having tranny problems. (I don't know what the original owner did, but evidently didn't know how to shift the car properly?)

Just looking for your thoughts, any comment appreciated.

Man thats not good at all.
After searching the web a bit for pics of 1st gear and how it functions. It seems uncommon for it to get stuck like that.
You say the shift linkage is ok but what are you talking about that's on top of the trans? The slave? The trans shifts from the side and nothing on top of it.

My only guess to your problem is maybe a broken shift fork??
Id drain the fluid and see how that looks.
What indy shop are you using? Wouldn't hurt to call a few shops to get some opinions on what could be the issue.

.

what isn't kosher right off the bat is that he's quoting you replacement parts before even knowing for certain they need to be replaced ( synchros/1st gear shaft ) etc. which it is true need to be looked at before making the determination to replace.

ask what he wants to drop the trans, .. then open it first and inspect. that'll give you an idea of how upfront/straight he's being with you.

* he's probably talking about the shift fork, and being misaligned.

I can confirm that the 1st/2nd fork is roll pinned to the rail and is not adjustable. Just doesnt seem possible to me for it to be stuck in gear unless the fork broken or something else happened

i'm not as familiar with the part names as i should be. but whatever it is that gets hung up during re-install of the trans and ya gotta line it up just right or the bolts wont line up? thought that was the fork.

That was my indy's thought.
He is fairly certain the problem is internal. (Something else happened scenario) Tranny is being pulled right now....will know more in a little bit.

Thanks for the responses though.
