New, my car burned 1 qt per 150 miles
Now, I have about 6500 miles on the car and it has improved to a little over 600 miles per qt of oil. Gradually, it keeps improving. Dealer wants to open it up, check and replace rings.... I hate doing that to a new car....

What did your dealer tell you is the normal consumption? My '03 X-50 uses a quart every 1,100 miles which still seems like alot to me but Barrier Porsche in Seattle tells me this is normal. You can really see the oil blowing out of my exhaust when you jump on it in third above 5,000 RPM. Thanks - Brad

Oil use like this in a flat six may be common, but it ain't normal. mine does it as well, I made the dealer put my complaint into my svc record should any probs arise in the future.
Interestingly, my friend bought a new GT2 that had sat on a dealers showroom for almost two years, 11miles on it. He consistantly uses a qt every 700 miles, they also gave him that 'normal' BS.

Before having it torn apart, I suggest you drive the car HARD for awhile. High revs on acceleration and lift off the gas pedal while still in gear at high revs and let the engine rev down. Repeat this several times over a few days. It may simply be some slight imperfections on the ring to cylinder contact that the high heat and pressure on the rings will correct.

Hello 1999: You or another from this forum recommended that to me a while back. That may be the reason I am up to 600 miles per qt. I tried that break in procedure. Thank you.

My car went through oil like there's no tomorrow the first 500 miles. As in, a quart every 150 miles like you.
After the break in period, it burns very little, and this is with over 20 track days a year.

If you want to find out right now what full break in will return in long term oil usage then send it to a dyno and break in in correctly.

"The honed crosshatch pattern in the cylinder bore acts like a file to allow the rings to wear. The rings quickly wear down the "peaks" of this roughness, regardless of how hard the engine is run.
There's a very small window of opportunity to get the rings to seal really well ... the first 20 miles !!
If the rings aren't forced against the walls soon enough, they'll use up the roughness before they fully seat. Once that happens there is no solution but to re hone the cylinders, install new rings and start over again."
