996 TT, need new clutch
I need to pick up a clutch for my 996 before I pull it out this summer.
Wondering what recommendations everyone has. Don't want to go stock, but don't want to go crazy either. Plan on doing a stage one upgrade at most. Right now just running a short shift and intake.

"Stage 1" Would just be doing the OEM gt2 clutch conversion. Its good for about 550whp. The next step up would be a sachs kit, but you're getting into the heavier aftermarket then.
Stage is a bad way of representing things. There are many setups that are good for different things.

people say they don't want to go "stock" as if porsche parts are a bad thing. the oem clutch can handle 500rwhp without issue. the issues tend to be the drivers and how they use the clutch and not the clutch itself ( not suggesting the op doesn't properly use his/her clutch! let's establish that! ). just saying the oem clutch in my car lasted very near 100k miles, and was only momentarily slipped if at a 10% +/- grade from a standing start, to get up a damn hill lol
but before you go crazy with all the clutch options, consider where you want to be power wise as you mod ( assuming you haven't ) then if stock don't think you'll ever need more than what is commonly referred to as the sachs 2.5 "kit". sachs is after all the maker of the oem clutch, and then you can add the 764 pp and etc etc.....or better yet, just look for pwdrhounds sig line an copy those parts before he ends up with a tilton or some madness after this anticipated rebuild coming lol
as for me, and my 500+ rwhp w lsd old rat rod, i have a new stock oem sachs with a gt2 disc and i dont really think about my clutch very often. it do what it do lol
..and i must be misunderstanding taboopc because the gt2 clutch "conversion" simply eliminates the hydraulically assisted shenanigans of the stock tt setup. it doesn't affect the clutch per se?!
my point ( if ever there is/was one? ) is that folks often "overthink" clutch parts. the only ones that dont and opt for all the fancier options are drag racing or over 600 rwhp etc. where they become "necessary".. then yeah.. do your homework because you will be tested.

My bad! You're right. Most people refer to the gt2 clutch "Conversion" as just the hydraulic assembly change.

^^ i understood that after my coffee lol. was 430 AM when i read it
agree also on the limits of the stock clutch esp w gt2 disc. i NEVER have issue at 500+rwhp

I opted to go with the LWFW and a sachs 2 clutch.
its still in the shop so I cant give a report, but I am really looking forward to driving it.

Out of curiosity, Who is doing the install for you?

Should have been a bit more descriptive. Stage 1 computer upgrade. Not really interested in changing much else. I have always had the mentality that when you replace something that breaks, you replace it with something better. I got the car with 52k, and it has just a little slippage at times. It has 56k on it now. If stock is a good option, I have no problem with that.
Would a porsche dealer be an alright option for the installation? I don't have many options in Alaska, but there is a dealer about 350 miles away.

i got away from dealers as quickly as i could, which coincided with my cpo expiring, i also despise the markups they charge both parts and labor. having said that, when in doubt you can never go wrong with oem. the thing about dealers is that since they are the workshop equivalent of an oem part? they do everything by the book, incl "book time" which is incredibly liberal in their repair time ( ahem ) estimates. aka BS. they also look at you like the nipper dog when you have any aftermaket stuff, as they just sit their at their computer terminals prior to wrenching and do what the porsche docs tell them to do. you could hardly call them innovative
..and after i decided to replace the clutch at approx 100k when i went inside for trans bearings ( if never slipped but i was trans out already ), i opted for the oem sachs with simply the tougher gt2 disc. i'm rwd at 525/550hp+/- and the clutch could well outlive me
so again, sachs 2.5 is enough for most any car up to 600rwhp, and mine will never slip where i'm at, but you'll never go wrong with just oem and my point is dont underestimate the holding power of the stock clutch for a mostly stock car. lastly, if the dealership is where you have to go so you can continue to outrun moose? so be it, at least it'll be done "by the book" and properly. good luck with it.

those damn moose can run.
I have spent many years in the car business and am very aware of the bs you have to put up with. Unless I can find a good shop I can trust with this car, I fear it may be the only option.
So if I were to go with the gt2 disc, and sachs 2.5, where is the best place to purchase?

With very few exceptions, I would say sambott in here. Unless it's nickle and dime stuff where pricing doesn't offer that large a differential BTW "dealer" and "online".
But I get most day to day stuff thru Sam as he's local to me matches or beats prices without extra conversation.. But I get his time and expertise at no charge. Which would explain why I would buy an OEM part (even) from him if it made sense mutually.
I got my OEM sachs clutch with a GT2 disc from him last year. While i coulda got it anywhere.
Best online vendors I use in no particular order are pelican/suncoast/ecs/vertex/USP.
.. But Sam gets my biz which is virtually very little in relative terms first, all else being equal.
BTW. The Sachs 2.5 kit it the next step up from my OEM w gt2 disc.
Get what you need while anticipating your future mods. If your stock with a tune etc? The moose will give you no trouble with the OEM setup. Just add the gt 2 disc.
Last thought.. Pricing BTW OEM w gt2 disc is roughly 500/600 minimum Less$$ than what is referred to as a " Sachs 2.5kit". You can figure out the math. Again gl with it.
