first time doing oil change myself on the 996
I will pull the post about the drain plugs-I believe there are 2 plugs to drain, but also wanted to check on a good place to buy a filter. I believe Mahle is the OEM filter and I have seen them for sale but wanted to make sure what I need to have included with the filter to ensure I have everything. Is there an O ring or something that is needed and also from what I recall I really need the oil filter wrench to remove the housing?
I have changed my own oil for almost 30 years and bought the 996 about a year ago. The first oil change was done at the dealer since I didn't have the time or space but now want to get this done before the heat kicks in. Also dealer had Pennzoil 5w40 and switching to Mobil 1 5w40.
Thanks for any info, tips or links. And again looking on where is good place to buy the filter and what brand?

ECS has some good oil packages that make it easy. Would replace the two O-rings on filter cap/housing. I use OEM filter which I believe is Mahle. I drain crank case first and oil tank second while leaving the plug out in crank case= less splatter for me. Bought OEM cap wrench which worked well but there are cheaper alternatives.

Mahle OX128/1D is the OEM filter and comes with the large o-ring, 76mm 14 flute cap wrench, little o-ring on filter housing is 999.707.465.40
Here is a recent RL thread on filters.. http://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo...lters-etc.html
52ft.lbs on crankcase plug, 44ft.lbs on oil tank plug(remember to 'support' the tank via the big nut above the drain plug), turbo sump plugs take 22ft.lbs.

If this is your first time - you should be aware that the plug on the bottom of the oil tank is very big - 8 liters of oil comes out in about 1.5 seconds. If you don't want to be a proud member of the Valdez club, make sure you are properly prepared for the volume and flow rate that follows the removal of the plug.

^_ Agree do not go to the dealer/ and purchase filter they go for $35 a piece.
1. Order online filters for that price you can buy even 2-3. for later change.
2. I'm using mobil oil 0w40 - I'm getting it from wallmart 2x - 2 jugs - 5qtrs in each.
3. you can get washers from local dealer. (I'm not draining turbos, since mine is pretty shot and i dont want to touch that.
4. get oil wrench, can be picked up from local Harley Davidson -motorcycle dealer. if you dont have one, or order from pelikan parts. (check size)
5. I do not even lift my car (im on stock suspension) im using flat oil pan for that.
heres a short video as well in details:
drop 8qrts in , start the car, let it warm up go around the block , and check oil level, add in small portions, DO NOT OVERFILL.
also 993GT is right : on oil tank plug(remember to 'support' the tank via the big nut above the drain plug) - you dont wanna crack your oil tank if its super tight.
oil change on 996 turbo its not expensive at all if you do it yourself it should cost you around 80 dollars if you do it yourself. I change my oil every 4k or 6 months. which ever comes first.

Thanks for the input and video to all. I looked for ECS and couldn't find their kit and tried Suncoast but it was $30 before shipping. So I ordered the filters at Rock Auto and wanting to know where to get the rest of the needed o rings or crush washers. I would guess the drain plug needs a crush washer, the filter seems to need a small o ring as well which doesn't seem to be included and what about the other 3 drain areas. Do they all need a new crush washer?

Thanks. Now is there a good place to get Mobil 1 5w-40? They don't seem to carry locally and on Amazon they have them only in the 6-1qt containers which is not cost effective. I would go Liqui-Moly as I can find that but want to stick with a Porsche approved oil.

Is there any reason why I would need a die cast filter removal tool over a standard abs plastic one? An Ebay seller is trying to up sell me to a "rare" German metal one. The filter housing cannot be on that tight where I would need a metal one, would it?
