PPI checklist
#2
Do a search for the checklist the techs use to CPO a car. While the check list is for newer models a lot of what it lists applies to the older models too.
Speak with an experienced tech where you intend to have the car serviced what things he has found over the years.
When I mentioned picking up an air-cooled 911 within earshot of a couple of senior Porsche techs at a dealer they both told me to let me know what MY and they'd go over what things to ask that had been done. Things like chain tensioner upgrades and stuff like that.
I never advanced to the point of actually needing to speak to them about an older car though.
Last but not least the car is just a used car so a thorough used car check out will go a long way to helping you know the car's condition.
Get a 15 mile test ride with the route selected to give the driver a chance to demo the car like you intend to use it. Afterwards swap seats and you drive the car over the same route and drive it the same way.
You want to spend time in the car with the engine running and the car on the road.
Afterwards check every system from lights to spoiler and everything in between.
Then if you still like the car arrange for a PPI. Among other things this gets the car in the air so it can be checked for issues like leaks.
