GT2 gearbox oil cooler

I've got hold of a 997 GT2 gearbox for my 996, however, it doesn't have the oil pump and cooler. Before I get the parts, i'm wondering how the valve works. I assume the mechanical pump is constant, so it must control the flow of coolant? So what conditions would the valve be open/closed and will my syvecs control it, does it plug into the existing loom?

There's a few bits to make it complete, I'm wondering if I need to buy them or just run coolant through it constantly, surely it would just maintain similar to engine temperature, which is no bad thing?

I found the answer to my own question, here's some info on the GT2 gearbox oil cooler if anyone is interested.

Pics not working, I've added them again below

Just thinking about it, I'm sure my GTR has a very similar engine oil temperature to the gearbox and is also cooled with a heat exchanger. Not sure why Porsche don't use the coolant to get the gearbox temp up, I know it takes much longer to get to operating temp in the GTR.

Anyone installed without the coolant valve?

I run it without the valve. On normal OAT no issues, but if you use your car in cooler climate (say below +10C), engine seems to be running slightly too cool.

Thanks, I'm in the UK, though it's mostly fair weather use. What does OAT mean? And are you saying the engine runs too cool due to coolant constantly passing the gearbox oil cooler?

I’ve removed the valve on my install. No issues at all, and based on Seattle with similar weather to london

Is the only way to run this cooler to have a GT2/3 gearbox or the housing for it? Or can a stock 996 turbo box be modded to use it?

You can def add a cooler to the stock TT trans. Use the inlet/outlet, add small MOCAL cooler or the like and add a t-stat. I'd prob ditch the t-stat and just let it cycle through the cooler.

True. But the benefit of the GT2/3 system is that it also provides a pressurized oil supply in addition to cooling. It is a two fold upgrade really.

OAT= outside air temperature. Summertime my engine temp seems to be (according to the gauge on instrument panel) abt 85C, in cold weather after installing transmission oil cooler abt 75C.

I'm running the 996GT2 gearbox and using the vacuum activated coolant valve controlled by MoTec. You should be able to do the same with Syvecs. FWIW, the external gearbox cooler parts are no longer available from Porsche last time I checked. Not sure if that's still the case.

Bloody hell, I hope not. The gearbox is virtually junk without it as the oil pump lubricates the whole gearbox. They also use the same pump on recent models, all the 997 GT3's use the same cooler and pump.

Unless you just mean the disc valve and solenoid? I noticed a few of the vacuum lines are NLA, but they're nowt really.

edit: just checked, the disc valve and vacuum change over solenoid are commercial items, so can be had much cheaper without the Porsche tax.
