major newbie question

Hello, all

I'd appreciate if someone gives me suggestions.
My turbo 04 got about 900 miles now. Engine oil check light came up already. Does that mean I have to go to dealer and change oil or I can just buy Mobil 1 and pour into it? What should I do?
Sorry to bother you all for this common sense question.
Thank you

Check your oil gauge before you do anything, you might have to add some oil.

It is very common to burn oil on a new motor, specially this one. I went through a ton of oil and still do. Just add one quart of Mobil 1 Synthetic 0w40 motor oil. For detail instruction, just look at the owners manual, becuase you definately don't want to add to much. I think the manual suggests adding a quart at a time and then re-checking your oil level. Good luck.

Darkspeed:

Do a search on any of these sites and you'll see that this is a topic that's been discussed. I think most people are surprised/alarmed at the ferocity of early oil consumption. Just keep it topped-up with the Mobile and you'll be fine. I'm at 3 1/2 K and consumption's really slowed-down significantly.

Cheers

Dave

Darkspeed, add 1/4 quart at a time, checking with each 1/4 quart where the oil level is (add very slowly and leave the engine running). You'll want to keep the final level about 1/4 quart low, to allow for expansion of the oil. Also, you might find that the first couple minutes when you read the oil level the bar graph will read, say, 1/4 quart low, then (after a couple minutes) will start reading 1/2 quart low (mine does). Don't over-analyze/over-worry this. Add oil when it gets 1 quart low, but add only 3/4 quart. Check oil frequently, especially the first 3,000 - 4,000 miles, after which consumptiuon should level off. But, it can still be high; I recall Porsche finds 1 quart every 600 mile to be within normal, but it can be lots better than that. In other words, you won't have an issue with PCNA unless you get fewer that 600 mile per quart. Suggestion: Whenever you park on a level spot, check the oil while you let the turbos cool for 1 1/2 - 2 minutes before shutting off the engine. Oh, theoil check will tell you if you are level, too.
