More Power?
More Power?
So here's my set up.
FVD Exhaust
FVD ECU/Program
EVO Intake
FVD Polished K24's
Speed Gallery Modded Wastegates and upgraded springs
New clutch, sparkplugs maf, dv's, etc.
So the car makes 1.0-1.1 bar of boost (mostly 1.0), spools very quickly and I am pretty happy, the car hauls ***.....I asked Speed Gallery to give me a seat of the pants estimate on HP when they had it last and they told me it felt like 575-600 HP.
I have been offered a pretty good deal on GIAC program (trade in my FVD) but I am wondering...........how much (if any) increase will I really see by going to 1.3 bar with the GIAC? Enough of a difference to spend several thousand dollars? What else is there to bump it up a little.....Other than headers / New Turbos?

Going to 1.3 from 1.0 is a big jump you will definetely notice the diffrence. Allen, Sam and Dan at The Speed Gallery are all good and knowledgable guys. Therefore I know your car is in good hands. The problem with horsepower is that after a certain point it becomes very expensive to make more power. It's fairly reasonable to make 550HP but it gets dramatically more expensive to get above and beyond that. Whether it's worth it is really up to your pocket book. Good luck and have fun.

they will hit 1.2 bars and back to 1 bar or 1.1....
better yet.. u cant hit 1.2 bars and hold it til 4rth gear....
so its crucial that u make good decisions and do ur homework..... and even expect the tuners to back up the claims.... ask lots of questions....

every bar is about 20hp, right?
turbochris - you will feel it. to give you an example: my car has been boost 1.55bar in 4-6th gear around 3krpm; that's a bit too much so i scaled it down to 1.4bar (with the boost controller) and it's definitely noticeable.
you'll most feel it if you're running 100 w/ a 100 tune.
neil also makes a great point re: response.

How much sustained boost is "safe" for the engine. I like the idea of more hp but my main interest is track driving not quarter mile stuff. the boost coming on high and backing off seems to make sense as far as a short race and engine protection is concerned. Kinda like the new 997TT does for a short burst of 10 seconds. But at some of the tracks I drive at the longest straight away is near 1/2 mile plus.
So my question is if you where to run higher boost how high is safe for track events with long straights???

Chris,
I hate to denigrate tuners, so I will be intentionally vague with my comments. I had a couple of different FVD programs during the first six months that I owned my 996TT. Euphemistically speaking, these programs were not up to par. I subsequently switched to GIAC and have never looked back!!!!! GIAC offers a panoply of programs for the gamut of applications and configurations. I have had several different GIAC programs and they have all worked well. Speed Gallery (who I highly recommend) has a long standing relationship with GIAC and they can get you into a new GIAC program that will advance your current set-up in a meaningful way.

I second that motion. 1.0 to 1.3 BAR is a HUGE difference. We get jaded with BAR, you're talking almost 4.5 PSI = .3 BAR. That's HUGE!
To be fair, at 1.0 bar you are probably making closer to 500HP. Closer to 550 at 1.2-1.3.
In some ways you are wasting your K24s by not going to 1.2 to 1.3 BAR, K16s can make 1.0 to 1.1 BAR with less lag. Go for the boost upgrade, the power is noticeable!
BTW I also highly recommend Speed Gallery. Good bunch of guys who know their sh*t.

I agree.. k24s god for 1.2 constant... 550 hp....
if u want more u need a k24 hybrid like kevins, protomotives, and evoms/IA.
wastegates are very important as well...
kevins stage5 turbos are great..... protomotives k24 hybrid, and the evoms gt640.. in my opinion these are the real player while keeping things still affordable...

When I had my X50, Evo Motorsports was telling me my factory K24 turbos can generate approximately 600 to 620 hp with their stage 4 program.
That's a lot more than 550 hp. ??

how about this, I had k24s with stage 4... and it definately didnt dyno 600 HP.
the other thing to consider... "what else" is required to achieve the 620 HP ?
te other things is that most of the dyno figures are done on 100 race gas on the race program... how often do u drive on race gas...
stock k24s, even with the billet wastegates are good up to 1.2 bars..... they run out of steam. if u go with hybrids thats another story.
