IIRC Jean has run some 60-130's in the 5s range some time ago in his Proto-monster in Arabian temps (>105F), which is shockingly impressive

Jean,

Just for clarification, I never once thought it was a second shift. As I told you via PM's, I assumed that due to the speed in which it ocurred and the unlikeliness that TXGold would lie...it was either caused by engine hesitation during acceleration, or another similar anomaly.

I never thought for a moment that there was any dishonesty on the part of TXGold about his runs, nor did I ever tell you anything of the like.

Scott,

Absolutely not, I meant that you also picked up a sudden drop in the long Gs, only you thought it could be sth. with the engine or similar. The drop looks the same as a gearshift, and it happens close to the rev. limiter in 2nd. I initially thought it would be a shift...

Wow, I don't know how I missed this all this time. Sick run Ryan! Congrats. That is REALLY impressive on stock K16s. It's got me thinking hard as to whether it's practical for me to go real wheel drive.

Don't let anyone get you down. It's the internet... there will always be doubters.

Got it, Jean. Thanks.

I thought those runs looked suspiciously similar to Caddy times. I should have known.;)

Awesome Martin! I'm glad to see you getting out there and doing this. Be sure to try starting in both 2nd and 3rd gear...and be at WOT before 50 mph (I start at 40 or so).

Scott - Did you do any runs starting in 3rd with one shift to see what kind of difference it made for the 60-100 time and the total time.

Quite a few. I average around 3/10th's slower 60-130 when I start in 3rd gear.

Yea I have great traction with my new tires so figure why not. Been doing tons of track work and will be club racing this summer, so I can always fit some more driving in. Just have to find a good spot for this :)

I'll try the 2 shift and 1 shift. I can shift pretty damn quick so I don't know if the 1 shift will be of any benefit with the lower rpm starting period, car reaaly doesn't have lag but at 30-40 starting in 3rd it might be slower. I'll do both for sure.

It's not about lag...it's about peak HP. Most of us make our peak HP at the top of our rev-range..which means as long as you can shift quick enough, you might do better by starting in 2nd and bringing it to redline.

You are right, but what I also meant is that starting in 3rd means your waiting for boost to build up and its much slower passing 60 then it would be in 2nd at 60, no?

It totally depends on the car. With my car, my boost is already hitting hard in 3rd before I reach 60...but since I'm not at the top of my rpm range (8k rpm), I'm not making my maximum power. Thus, it benefits me to lose a little time by shifting twice rather than once, in order to stay in the peak of my RPM range as much as possible throughout the run.

If you have a lower redline and your car's HP peak is near the high end, than you may be at max power closer to 60 in 3rd than I am...which means you may be better off with one shift.

My only point about lag was that unless we're talking about cars that don't build boost until after 60 mph in 3rd (neither my car, nor your car falls into this category), than it isn't really an issue. It comes down to where in the powerband your car is making its peak power....and how close you are to that point when you are in 3rd gear at 60 mph.

Of course the speed that you shift helps as well. Not only for the obvious reason (reducing the time that you aren't accelerating), but it also may prevent a large drop in RPM and get you back into boost sooner. This is primarily why turbo cars with autos are so fast in 1/4 mile and 60-130 runs. They never drop out of boost during the run.
