What is the hardcore Porsche enthusiast's opinion of turbo Porsches?

For its most hardcore cars (GT, GT3), Porsche shuns turbos.

Major auto racing (F1, DTM, F3000) avoid turbos. Major onroad racing also goes without awd.

The 911 turbo adds these "unpure" features to a car that's, what..40+ years old in design? Do true Porschefiles look down on the turbo?

From 1976 onwards, the long-distance races for the World Constructors' Championships were raced with so-called production racing sports cars, according to the new Group 5 ruling. This was the signal for Porsche to develop the 911 Turbo (internal designation 930) and create the 935. The 600 bhp 935 from Porsche was entered in the long-distance races for the World Constructors' Championships in 1976. The premiere was a success: In Mugello as at the next race in Vallelunga, Ickx/Mass drove straight to overall victory and thus, after a five-year break, they were able to bring back a World Constructors' Championship title for Porsche. The 935 numbers among the most successful vehicles in the era of racing sports cars approximated to the production version.

At the 24 hour race, Dauer showed up with both a road version and race version of the Porsches 962, a design which had already won Le Mans six times. After winning the race, the FIA declared it would be creating rules to make sure the 962 wouldn't be back in 1995. However, with a Le Mans win under their belt, and with support from Porsche, Dauer continued to build their road-going 962.

Porsche has had incredible racing success with turbo charged cars. If I recall correctly the 917 series cars were banned (rules changed) because nobody could compete (beat) with them. Why would a true Porschefile look down on them...anyone should look up to them - with great respect.

Here's a good read about turbo charged Porsches... http://www.supercars.net/garages/PeP/44v2.html

What defines a "purist"? If it's someone that's ignorant, closed-minded, and unable to see outside of the box...then their opinion doesn't matter to me anyway.

Porsche turbo cars were constantly legislated out of existence in racing to make others look good. That is why they are no longer able to show their stuff and hence the N/A cars carrying the batten.

I had a air cooled 993TT as well as a boxter and current 996tt.
A Porsche is a Porsche... who cares if it has a turbo or not.
Mercedes Benz has a long time racing history and look what they are doing to the V12s... turbo charging.... supercharging... etc...
look at audi, VW, saab, volvo, etc... not to mention all the JApanese cars...
I think this thread is pointless.
sorry but thats just my opinion.

Sanctioned racing rules try to equalize cars for competitive racing, and fitting high perf. T-Turbo cars added too much to the mix for them.

“True Porschefiles” come with different tastes.
So there are those who like naturally-aspirated cars over turbos. These guys track their GT3s and exploit the handling/response package. For them, a GT3 is the preferred ride and we can respect their choice.

Some detractors of the turbo claim they don’t’ like the exhaust sound. If that’s their criteria, they may find that the exhaust note from a F355, or F360/w Tubi pretty darn good.

They will also complain that they just could not accept the turbo lag. For 80% of these, I wonder if the only thing they couldn’t accept was the turbo-lag to their bank account.

For many, all-round performance on the track and on the road in the wet & indry speaks. Before the CGT, the GT2 / TT was , and easily still is, at the top of the P-car food chain, especially over the vanilla variants. imho

true story.

a bunch of Le Mans racecars used to run turbos, some JGTC 500 cars run turbos, and WRC cars run turbos while beating on them through the snow, mud, rain, etc....
