Garrett turbochargers

What about putting some gt28 turbos on the 996tt. They are cheap at 1000 each and reportedly are good for 350hp each. Is their any downside to using garrett's as opposed to k24's? Would the garretts spool up quicker?

They would not bolt up.... you would need to machine them into KKK housings like Evo with their GT640 and up kits or encounter some expensive fab work. Ask Markski, he is going with GT35R's and I think they are from the same family.Would be an interesting combo though. Kevin

Yes the gt28s are nice but u need custom headers and exhaust.,..
Or you can force them into the k24 housings...

yes and most decent shops can do that so you dont spend an arm and a leg on them. I know that Proto offers a k24/18g hybrid for $3720 a pair outright.. and thats the turbo Scott has on his car( 10.6s 1/4 mile). And if you have a k24 already then its only $1000 a pair to get them reworked... not bad especially when I paid $5750 a pair for stock k24s 3 years ago.

The protomotive shootout car ran t3/t04e 46trim turbos. If you don't feel like custom headers, turbokraft can mod your stock headers for 800 bucks so the garretts are bolt on. Tial has gt28 turbos for the 996tt but they aren't proven. The k24/18g turbos are a killer deal.

You can simply weld the flanges on the muffler and headers. The issue will become the program. Turbos are the easy part but make sure you have proper programming. GT28s make good power so it will be beyond programming of the K24, even tweaked programming. There are also some oiling changes that need to occur when making this modification.

Do the k24/18g have a large amount of lag? and would they require modifying engine internals to use them? how would ui compare them to Kevins k16/k24 hybrid setup..

In other words..Im planning on getting an X50 package with the k24 turbos.. I was going to switch them out with k16/k24 hybrid setup from Ultimate motorworks.. Does this sound like a step in the right direction?.. Bit if i do the k24/18g, im wondering if the enigine would need strengthening to get the most out of them..?

with the k24/18g ur at 600 rwhp if u do the set up that Divirextreme has... otherwise ur at 600 hp at the crank. so no you do not need it.
LAg- well all gt2s come with k24s and no one ever complains about lag.... so even if u increase the lag by 500 rpms u make up for it on top with 7500 rpms redline. Plus when ever ur racing ont hr street its usually 3rd gear pulls anyway and ur in the power band by then...

Don't forget, lag can be masked by pumping the low end with timing and proper tuning. What Porsche does is neuter the low end. So any half way decent tuning will help pull the low end up and get the car moving, building load and hitting boost sooner. K24s are pretty laggy in the stock form or stock program. They like any other turbo (for the most part) can be enhanced.
