FVD's Air Intake Plenum

i have all the parts (Mods) fitted except this part that is left, i'm having second thoughts about it since i have allready invested so much money in Mods, how important is this part, does it make a lot of difference performance wise when installed, is it worth it?

In FVD website they claim that this part add 25HP.

It is all about flow...get it done.

What turbo's do you have?

kayman Apr 14, 2007 12:21 PM

isnt there a greater chance of blowing the maf with these?

Craig Apr 14, 2007 12:29 PM

It depends on your other mods and HP goal. The OEM piping between the airbox and the turbos is probably adequate for K16s with upgraded programming and an exhaust making 500 hp. On the other hand, if you are using after-market turbos and seeking 600+ hp, the OEM piping may be restrictive and upgraded piping is probably warranted.

BTW, there are several options for upgraded piping between the airbox and the turbos, including FVD, Gemballa, EVOMS, Speed Gallery, S-Car-Go, Prototmotive, and likely UMW as well.

Definately. When I first had the GT640 kit, I was OK with the MAF. I then installed the FVD Intake and the EVO VFlow at the same time and 2 things happened. 1) The increased air flow made me continually bump off of the 1.3 bar throttle body shut down, 2) The increased air flow was popping the MAF.

You will definately increaee airflow with the FVD Intake.

To add onto the post by Craig, could any users or the vendors of the above plenum options (FVD, Gemballa, EVOMS, S-Car-Go, Speed Gallery, Promotive, and UMW) post:
- pics
- their results (HP and/or ET improvement)
- some general comments on the performance and installation

I think this could be really helpful as this is one of the few performance parts that gets any attention, and is surely one of the most restrictive in stock form.

Thanks in advance!

i have FVD's K24/K26 Racing turbo's, fuel pressure regulator, diverter valves Moded ECU, BMC air filter, Racing clutch/flywheel, exhaust system with headers, GT2 intercoolers

I use the Gemballa intake piping. It is made out of silicone. I do not have any performance data for the system. I do know, however, that the interior dimensions of the Gemballa piping are larger than the FVD unit, which is why I went with Gemballa. On the other hand, the FVD unit is considerably less expensive. All of these units require an engine drop to install, but are otherwise reasonably straight forward.

I do not have any photos or data for the units sold by EVOMS, IA, UMW, Protomotive or S-Car-Go. These are photos of the Gemballa unit:

What's the going rate for these?

The FVD K24/K26 turbos, although not one of my personal favorites (I very briefly owned a pair that did not work), probably pull/push enough air over stock K16s to benefit from upgraded intake piping. In other words, those turbos might be able to benefit from more air than the OEM piping can supply.

I think the FVD unit is just shy of $2000. The Gemballa piping used to have a MSRP north of $3000 (a genuine rip off), but I was able to obtain a considerably lower price direct from Gemballa in Germany, and Gemballa USA (Heinz) matched the price (I do not recall exactly what I paid).

I had the exact set up as you.. including the FVD piping.... I ran 11.5 sec. 1/4 mile at 124 mph. Will you see an awesome difference in performance if u put this unit inn... NO... u do have to drop the motor and thats not cheap. I would do it if I had a clutch job to do.. that would make sense.

Sorry, this is wrong...there will be no increased chance of changing this piping. It is not frelated to the MAF (intake side). I won't suggest what blew your MAF, but it was not the FVD intake plenum.

jimmer23 Apr 14, 2007 05:15 PM

So you're saying that by increasing the diameter and efficiency of the pipe directly behind the MAF (sucking through from the turbos) can't increase the flow going through the MAF? Sorry, I respect your opinions, but you're dead wrong on this one.
