What's Most Linear 600hp Package 996tt=Evoms,Proto,UMW ?
Okay, as described in some previous threads, my evoms gt-640 is useless on a road-course track, IE Limerock, Watkins. I do DE Events Yellow, and going around a corner at half throttle 4k-rpm or more is awful. My oem 996tt with the k16's was IMO amazingly stable. The power band was beautifully spread across the entire pedal and holding consistent. I spoke to Evoms, they said its just turbo surge and nothing can be done. Others having my issue told me to call Protomotive, well they really knew their stuff when i was speaking on the phone. Part of the discussion included the mafs maxed out issues at 600hp. Well, whatever the case, My driving needs include a linear stable pedal. focusing on the question at hand, has anyone driven a couple different of these packages on a roadcourse track ? ( no not 1/4 mile gas pedal on / off) At this point i wouldn't mind trying a different one if i knew it would be more linear. Otherwise, track use= i miss my k16's...

Get the RUF package if you want linear. The torque curve is extremely wide and power is not peaky and very easy to modulate. Part throttle/full throttle is like factory. May not have at much power as they other tuners, but definately controllable and good for the track.
I put the EVOMS V-flow in my RUF and the low end torque seems to be missing -- that is until I hit 4K and it shoots out like a cannon. Definately more power up top at the expense of low end torque and linearity. |
This is a pretty common problem on most turbo drive by wire cars that are tuned for mainly street/drag use.
A good chip tuner can produce a second file for you that has a more linear power delivery. This is usually a combination of slowing the peddle speed to throttle plate down as well as slowing boost on set before and slightly after torque peak. If this is done correctly, there is a much more linear (but weaker) power delivery. Most people report back with faster lap times when I put together track files like this. Take a look at the Audi s4 dyno plot below. The owner also has a 997 gt3 and was looking for a more linear power delivery out of his audi, like his 997. Dotted is street/strip Solid is race Blue is tourqe Red is HP Black is Boost http://www.eplabs.net/pub/track_vs_street.JPG |
I had the Speed Gallery K16/24 low clearance set-up. Very smooth and predictable with excellent power. Engineered for quick spool, good power and perfect driveability. And they are great to work with - ask for Sam, he knows his stuff. Turbohead (board member) bought my old set-up and he tracks a lot. I'm pretty sure he is very happy with it.

I know exactly where your coming from, there is a max out level you can take the Turbo's to I feel, you get beyond that it becomes a very difficult car to drive/handle especially on track.
If you can carry good speed in and out of corners it's half the battle, but it's a nightmare in a Turbo even with some uprated Suspensions (Sharky, say no more, lol) Like others mentioned a custom tune would be a great way to have smooth useable power delivery, but I can tell you for sure, you will also have to concentrate on suspension and brakes if you want to get a good combo all working together. |
great information i thank you guys, i just installed a kw v3 suspension. all being retuned with Kip from Farnbaughers in Danbury CT, hes reviewing the car and hoping it can be tweaked a bit at least for this weekends track event... D.W.

i think the custom tune, as mentioned, is your best option. btw, great info, nerdhotrod. all of the tuners mentioned will do a custom tune.

I'm not sure that you'll get any big turbo car to do what you want it to do on the track. If you'll willing to get a custom tune and give up some of your peak HP/topend you'll have an easier time getting there. A canned approach like the Evoms GT700 kit isn't going to fit your needs as you've found out. I'm not sure that Proto or anyone else can get there either with a bolt on kit.
Good luck! |
UMW ZC .... I heard that some dude named Kevin does wonders ... LOL

UMW ZC... really really really linear... you can selectively have boost off idle and it rolls on smooth and quick... You can completely control boost/hp with your right foot.
If your ever in Seattle by accident I will let you try it out. Seth. |
+3 on UMW...very nice linear 600+

SLOMO!!!!! I would LOVE to see what the beast does.... Laughing Gas optional...
