Targa's - Good & Bad points?
 

So I am still in the market for a car... and at one point I new exactly what I wanted... But recently saw a targa... and they look pretty cool.

Is there anything about the targas I should know?
For instance- do they get alot of chassis squeek? any other problems with those tops?
Anything else besides the glass sliding top that is different than the coupe?
I imagine the targas weigh a little bit more.

Targa owners- what's the best and worst about the targa?

targa sales are lowest in the 911 line. it is the heaviest of the line. also, targa has a different C pillar which is iconic to the 911 profile.

to me, targa is a large sunroof with a hatch opening that provides access to the shelf behind the rear seats. some see it as the best of a coupe and a cab, others see it as a 1/2 ass between coupe and cab.

i have heard of some squeaks on targa but i don't think it's something that can't be fixed and it is certainly more quiet than a cab. if you want a tight chassis, i' d get a coupe.

i own a cab myself and would either opt for a coupe (for track, rigidity, lowest weight and safety) OR a cab (for true open air, stylish). not saying targa is bad, just not enough of trade off between fun and performance.

Down side is if a boulder ever comes crashing down on your roof. But what are those odds? :)

Like DJ said, I think the modern targas are either the best of both worlds or compromise between coupe and cab. Really depends on your personal preferences.

When i was buying a Porsche i was looking at a Yellow Targa and the C4S that i bought... The sales rep told me the Targa roof in "cold weather" has a really annoying rattle that cannot be fixed... So if your in Cold Weather dont buy it... If you are in Cold Weather and plan to drive it only in the Summer times, then buy one... I love the Tagra Roof....

Besides all other points mentioned above, there is no protection from the sun offered by that silly glass roof. So if you're bald, you better keep a hat in the car!

There is a power retracting sun shade in a targa. The top does have some rattles but not as bad as the 993 targas. The rear opening glass adds a ton of utility to the car. Basically, you need to drive one and decide if it is for you.

I have an '02 Targa and love it. I was coming from a Boxster - wanted the ragtop, but didn't want the silly plastic window (and all their problems) they came with. The regular sunroof on the 911 is very small- the Targa really is the best of both worlds - I can open the top at virtually any temperature - the sunshade actually does provide protection for bald people (experience talking), mine has no rattles - and I love the hatchback - I'd definitely get another one....love mine.
