Possible to DIY diagnose check engine light?

On my old E36 M3 I was able to check the codes by jumpering the diagnostics connector.

My check engine light is on in my 1999 C2. Is there a way to check the codes w/o taking it to a shop? Thanks.

Buy yourself and OBDII. You can get them from 100-200 on the low side depending if you want one that runs through a PALM or if you want one that can run through a laptop. I chose the laptop route and paid $100 for the software and cable. It sounds as though you might have one though. If so, see if the plug is the same (which is probably is) as your M3.
