How do you remove a 996 shift ****?

I just got a 997 shifter to install, I lifted the trim around the shift boot and the rest looks easy. However, the **** and boot, are they 1 piece? Do I just pull the shift **** off? Is there a set screw? It is a 996 2000 Cabrio. I have to pull pretty hard if is is pull off. Any tips would be great. Thanks

it is easier if you get behind the front seats and pull from there. just sit in the back and pull up and it should pop off

Snap the trim ring, pull the boot over the **** and there is a screw that that needs removed. At that point the **** and boot come off as one no problem.
That was on my 2001, hope it helps you out

Now that you got it fixed

How do you like the 997 shifter compared to the 996 shifter. Did you go with the stock 997 or the short 997 shifter?

I have not put it in yet because I am looking into upgrading the shift linkage, just not sure to go with agency power or vertex auto. If anyone has an opinion let me know.

I have the agency power linkage, but I don't think there is a big difference between this and the Vertex one. The biggest difference is just replacing the stock piece, which is plastic and tends to wear and get loose, addiing play to the feel of the shifter.
