Gt3 engine in NA 996

Anyone ever try/investigate putting a GT3 engine in a 996? Would it be similar in price as just getting a 3.6 996 and if not, how much more?

IIRC I read somewhere that a new crate motor from Porsche for a GT3 is somewhere in the neighborhood of $35-40K.

Cheapest way to do this swap is find a wrecked GT3 and buy the whole car. There's soo much that goes into the swap that you're best having the whole car to complete it....for instance your "regular" 996 transmission won't mount to the GT3 block so you need a GT3 transmission as well.

RUF does this swap for one of their package cars (can't remember at the moment what it was called). Maybe RUF GT or some such. Someone on this board had one for sale a few months ago. IIRC the swap was north of 35k.

1) A GT3 engine is over $40K retail [996.100.979.00 (2004) and .01 (2005). From Pelican, the 2004 GT3 engine is $47,000, and the 2005 is $55,000. You might get a wholesale price through a better connection, but you are still looking at $35,000+

2) Ruf does an RGT conversion.

That is a nice thought but I can't see putting that kind of money into the car. I would rather supercharge it or keep the car stock and buy a used Turbo car.

Yeah, I agree with the above comment. How much are used 2002-2005 turbo cabs running now?

Or just go get a used GT3. Prices are not that outrageous at this point.

There is an engine/trans on sale on Rennlist, $20K.

Prices on the real GT3 are down to high $40s. Just sell, save and buy a GT3. That is what I'll be doing.

Yeah but I love my Cab (or Cabs in general). Just looking to see what the possibilities are. And I'm not going to be tracking my car so an actual GT3 doesn't make sense but its engine in my 996 might have. Seems like not such a hot idea. Oh well. On to another idea.

Thumbs up

If you are willing to fork out that much, get a gt3 and "cab" it. If done right, you might retain value as it will be probably the first and last true GT3 cab known to man . Collectors will buy it.

I have a 99 cab, arctic silver and boxter red. My plan is to install MKII and euro rear bumper. Other than usual mods in engine and suspension, I'd consider charger. So, I hear you, jokes apart I'd love a GT3 but I love the cab... tough choice. Ideally I'd cab a gt3. no kidding but cash is hard to justify.
