3.4L with simple bolt on dyno 335WHP ??

Hi,

Today I read something about a guy who dynoed 335 WHP with these simple bolt on on a 1999 996 C2.

He claimed he put :

- BMC cold air intake and filter
- Stainless steel B & B headers and full exhaust
- Upgraded performance chip

That is all about it for the parts. Is this something possible for a 3.4 ? Can someone recommend the best for the buck engine upgrade for my 1999 996 C2 ?

Thanks

All that stuff might get you 7-15hp on a 3.4 motor. I doubt a 40 hp gain.
Remember, just because a certain mod claims x hp, and another y hp, they may not be cummulative. You need to do multiple, repeated dyno runs, throwing out any outliers(hi or lo) to really get any relevant data. Otherwise, it's all anecdotal and not reproducible car to car.
Read all claims with a grain of salt. If 40 hp was that easy to get, why wouldn't porsche do that i(nstead of the x51 option that is a major rebuild and adds less )?
These engines are already highly tuned and not that much more can be gleaned with 'bolt-on' mods.

I think that 7-15 is about right, but not 40. I think it's going to take headers as well to get any sort of real gain, and even that might not give you 40.

That can't be Wheel HP but possibly Crank HP. My WHP dyno pre SC was 260 with Fabspeed intake, FVD headers and Cargraphic exhaust. I think we all have found that the only real HP gain is with forced air induction. Will

40 HP? No way! The best dyno I've seen yielded 22 HP (20?), and that was after extensive ECU tuning while the car was on the dyno. Most tuning results yield closer to 10HP at around 6K RPM, with a loss of torque lower down.

Supposedly with the proper Motronic computer ( Porsche Motorsports) and extensive exhaust mods ($6K+) there is some serious power to be had from the 3.4l, at least this is what I was told from a fairly well known Porsche race mechanic (Cup cars etc.) ( BTW the car would no longer be street legal). So I guess it is possible, but not with any over the counter mods for sure. Don't ask me how much power because you wouldn't believe me anyway, just think GT3 range.

Headers were probably the biggest gain at maybe 8-10hp after that the BMC filter is nominal and the exhaust maybe a few HP , many exhaust actually cause power loss.

This might be a question for a new thread

What piggyback or ECU upgrades are best. I've heard good things about Giac and Unichip. But have never had a chance to see the results directly. Unichip seems to be hot in the Subaru market. http://www.unichip.us/index2.html

I would be very interested in a more HP/TQ in my midrange for autocrossing. Any responses with first-hand experience would be great.

Read the Dec month Excellence Mag. The article on the new boxter on page 62 the author says that the motors keep the same displacement and achieve their extra HP from "bolt ons"...Throttle body increase, redesigned exhaust and remapped ECU to give 12 HP gain on the reg version and 22 HP increase on the S version. This info would support the 10 to 15 HP gain talked about here.
What will be interesting is when the turners get a hold of the new already tuned boxter that has already been "worked" and claim an additional 10 to 20 HP gains with high performance exhausts and intakes. Being that, that has already been done by porsche engineers.

Headers and exhaust only provide around 8-10 HP. Air intake another 5 and ECU combination around 15-20 for a total of 35 HP to the wheels. theres no way he could get more.

You are the first guy I've seen with a TPC sc, how do you like it?
Why TPC over the EVO?
I'm doing a sc this winter.

The real key to HP on the N/A 3.4 & 3.6 motorsis the catlytic converters. Our Power kit for the 3.4 and 3.6 yielded 33HP with a good portion of the gain coming from the high flopw cat and ECU. The header is good for app 10HP and the mufflers are in place mostly for weight saving and improved sound, Point being there is still good HP to be found in these cars.

So are you saying 33 HP gain or 43 hp gain?
Is that shown on a dyno?
I know you have a great rep here on the board.

not 43HP.. That seems al little high. The best we have seen is 33HP on a dyno. These N/A engines respond to tuning but unfortunetaly have a definite limit with bolt ons. Michele's (porsche Babe) car has all of the bolt ons and certainly feels as if it is making every bit of 30+HP, We plan to dyno very soon.
