Detailed DIY Sound System Install With 50+ Photos

Starting at post 21 is a pictorial of a sound system I installed over the summer of 2009. The system was purchased from Rod Birch at Car Audio Innovations. As a hobby, I've installed many systems over the years, but the 996 was by far the favorite. Enjoy! Pictorial on website has been permanently removed.

Great write up on your DIY. Did a similar install myself, but kept the OEM head unit and no speakers behind the seats. But my car is a C4, so there is alot less room in the trunk. The area where you put the crossovers and amps is taken up. Unfortunately mine are still floating in the trunk. Will figure out the mounting one of these days. Did not think to seal the door enclosures, I used Focal 5WS. Guess I will go back in one of these days and do that. Thanks for your efforts.

Great pics and tutorial. The 1st pic shows the center console out- how hard is it getting to that point? How do you like the Kenwood HU? I've been looking at the 792. comments from owners have me wondering about the bright blue light at night, reading the display during the day and using the righthand control **** to select songs. Your comments?

Would like to hear the system sometime. I'm in OP.

Good question... sorry, I don't remember! There are 4 screws though. I may have removed the plastic surrounding the individual buttons?

I like it a lot for the price. http://www.hookedontronics.com has it for $165 w/ free shipping. I use the remote control a lot more than I thought I would.

The 693 allows you to choose from a list of pre-defined colors, including one that is VERY close to redish dash lights in our 996s. There's also a "custom" configuration where you can set the colors. I find the green setting works well in sunlight with the convertible top down. I agree, the righthand control **** is a drawback for controlling the configuration menus, selecting songs, etc. It takes some getting used to.

Thanks for the write up. I'm installing a Kenwood double DIN unit, with the Hertz 3-way system, and Focal subs next week. I'm also using the Audison LX-6 amp. Hopefully mine turns out as clean as yours.

I lucked out and found a set of these on Ebay for around $650. They're designed by Rod Birch of Car Audio Innovations. Fit like a glove. 8" shallow-depth Earthquake subs. No interference with the front seats. Subs hit pretty low.

Ha! I think we may have to find out this weekend. The weather is supposed to be in the 60s here in KC. My dad won't be driving your old car though... probably my brother-in-law instead. Surely low bass is worth a few extra horsepower!

You're going to love those Hertz 3-ways. I left the rear speakers OEM, just for sound fill. What do you have planned for the rears?

Which Kenwood are you installing? I installed a DDX714. Check out my current thread.

Nice write-up! Since I'm still planning to upgrade my speakers, your write-up is very helpful. The Earthquake SWS actually works pretty well. In my case, I installed a couple of 6.5s on my passenger footwell. Unfortunately, they are no longer in production and I lucked out on the last pair in my local audio shop.
