How many of you guys are going to keep your 996's more than 6 years?
With Neil's question about extended warranty, it got me curious.
During my 3 hour each way drive to a customer yesterday(in my 996 as usual) I saw a 997S and thought about upgrading to a 997S as part of my Cayenne deal(buyging 2 cars at once must get you some really good discount) and skipping getting a 987S next year, but then I thought within 2-3 years porsche will most likely have a facelift, then 3 years after that another model(Following their update history) so I figured I might as well wait and not be tempted. What's everyone else's thoughts on keeping their 996 and are you making the decision based on time or mileage as to when it's time? |
I'm keeping mine 5-6, or indefinitely. I won't let that stop me from getting another Porsche down the road, however, despite all this hoopla about the 997, I actually LIKE my 996. (I'll like it a lot better in about a week! ;)) I can see me with some sort of GT3 or even a Turbo Cab in a few years time.
(Is my car done yet Alex? hilarious ) |
Drive it until the wheels fall off.

I agree with Robyn. I'll keep my 99 cab until I upgrade to a turbo cab sometime. Either that or a sailboat.

I had intended to keep my prior two Porsches for a long period of time, but ended up upgrading after 2-3 years for the newer technology. When I upgraded my 1993 968 to a 1996 993, I was floored by the increase of performance. Since then I moved into the '02 996 C2 Cab, and each model just get's better everytime. Sometime in the future I would also like to get into a turbo.

You know what my answer is. I intended to keep it at least 10 years. My last sports car was kept 14 years. With this car I am concerned.
I bought it knowing about the high cost of maintaining ( brakes, tires oil changes, clutch...etc) I did not count on engines and other MAJOR problems. That is why I am considering an extended warranty. |
wow 6 years is a long time...

wow 6 years is a long time... I CAN REPLY!! OMG! Okay, as for the topic - I change cars every year, but will most likely keep the 996 unless offered a decent price :) |

For some reason, after I detail a Porsche, I feel obliged to keep it forever. My 968 Cab is under a cover in my parents garage. Can't wait till summer when a can do the TT, then it will be mine.
Maybe I'll get over it with the TT, but I don't know what I would park in that spot. Maybe a Ferrari F500 spyder (not the 1954 model, but a 2012 model). |
<<<<I bought it knowing about the high cost of maintaining ( brakes, tires oil changes, clutch...etc)>>>>
Unless you track the car, I don't see how you can say these cars have a high cost of maintenance. Tires, yes, since the rears need to be replaced about every 10,000 miles. But oil changes are no more expensive than any other car. Less than $100. Brakes are no more expensive than a a BMW or MB or other car at the same level and should last 40,000 miles or so for the fronts and twice than for the backs ones. The clutch should last you more than 100,000 miles so that is not even a maintaiance item. Replace a clutch on any new car and you are at $1500 or more anyway. Air filters and the like are no more expensive than any other car. So if you drive your car 10,000 miles a year, excluding tires, your annual mainatence expense (including a clutch at 100,000 miles , brakes, etc, you may be talking $600 a year for 10 years. That's hardly expensive maintenance in my opinion. |
