New Carrera S II's powdercoated

Picked up a great set of Carrera S II rims from Roadrage (thanks again for the wheels!), powdercoated them, and installed them on the targa the other day. Went with Hankook V12s in 235 and 295. Car is on the stock suspension, but with the larger diameter wheels/tires the wheel well is filled out more. 15mm spacer in F, 7mm in rear. Here are some pics:

Also added Fabspeed quad tips in black chrome.

Looks really good.... Is the color black or gunmetal? and what type of finish did you go with?

prsdoc Jun 28, 2010 09:14 AM

Thanks, the rims are black powdercoated with a 20% gloss, which actually looks shinier than it may sound. None of the powdercoating companies I talked to recommended going full matte, as it can make the rims look rather dull.

Very nice. I have the same color 03 C2 and I was thinking about gunmetal color rims. Do you mind if I ask how much the power coating cost?

prsdoc Jun 28, 2010 01:13 PM

$80 per rim for the powdercoat out the door. The quotes I had were highly variable from $75 to $200. The company I went with does the powdercoat for some of the local car dealers and their price was competitive, so I went with them. The powdercoat company my Porsche dealer recommended was the highest quote, after telling them I was referred by the dealer... go figure.

It seems like you get bent over just a bit more when people know you have a Porsche. "Uh, how much for powdercoating some Honda rims? - ...$50 per wheel". "Hi, I have a Porsche and would like to get an estimate for powdercoating my factory BBS wheels - ...That will be $150 per wheel sir"

At least that's been my experience. Now I just carry a bigger tub of Lube in my trunk since I tend to bend over more driving the Porsche.

996 Targas are always nice. I like the wheels you added.

Can they powder coat over chrome? Would it cost more?

BTW the car looks really sharp!

prsdoc Jun 29, 2010 12:32 PM

Thanks for the comments, guys. The changes have made me love the car all over again... maybe a wing next? Or suspension?

The chrome will need to be stripped prior to powdercoating. I'm not sure if the company I used would've been able to do this, but I'm sure any shop that can chrome a rim can also take it off. The original Porsche silver finish on the rims did have to be stripped with an acid wash, followed by media blasting, and cleaner/phosphate/sealer rinse & wash prior to the actual powdercoat process.

Rear spacer looks like it might have been a bit too big? Still looks great though!

prsdoc Jul 13, 2010 04:33 PM

Yeah, probably don't need the spacer in the rear. The 7mms were on the front, and the 15s in the back originally, I just switched 'em out. Been too busy to take them off the rear.
