RMS leaking again after only 250 miles

I had the IMS seal (not the bearing) done when my orginal RMS was changed. My car hasn't leaked a drop of oil in years. The latest version of the RMS should be quite good if it is installed properly, with the RMS tool (which a Porsche dealer should have).

The IMS seal was replaced the same time the RMS was done, so I'm curious what the issue will be. I should know on Tuesday.

Got my car back already it turns out it was the Intermediate Flange Seal that needed to be replaced. Yes, they had to drop the tranny and replace all the same parts again. Of course, no charge to me.
I asked about changing the IMS bearings & I guess the bearings are not sold separately by Porsche and that is not a service they provide or do. We briefly discussed aftermarket, but the timing would not have worked, etc.

Too bad....the local Porshe dealer is now installing LNE bearings as Porsche does not offer a factory alternative.

Is this Barrier? I asked them about this a year ago and the service advisor claimed that the bearing is none serviceable without a complete engine disassembly.

Just found a small tricle under my engine last night. Looks like I am heading to the dealer for a RMS seal. How much should I expect to pay if it is only the RMS that needs replacing?

Yes. Was at Barrier last Saturday for a local PCA event and Gary (service writer) said they are now doing the LNE bearings since Porsche has no factory option. I previously had mine done at Chris's -- that seemed to do a good job.

Around $1,500.00

If you need any clutch work while the tranny is out just add some more dead presidents to that #!

With respect, I think $1,500 for the RMS is high, even at the dealer. The primary labor expense is dropping the transmission to get to the RMS and taking off the clutch and flywheel; once you're there, the RMS itself is only $20 and the replacement is about 1/2 hour labor.

The prior owner of my car had the RMS replaced by the dealer in 2006 and was charged $340 to drop the transmission and $128 to replace the RMS (presumably includes taking off the clutch and flywheel).

My indy recently did the transmission drop, removed the clutch and flywheel and replaced the clutch, slave and RMS [no leakage, but minimal additional cost to renew the RMS with the latest (and improved) seal while he was in there] for labor of $866 for everything (including the clutch replacement). A clutch kit is about $500 from Suncoast if you can bring your own -- the $866 was labor only.

While he had the transmission out, he also did the LNE IMS upgrade, which you should also insist on (part is about $500); my indy's labor for the IMS upgrade, checking all belts, hoses and fluids, etc. was $384.

Dealer will likely be higher, but hope this is helpful.

Someone posted this info on another thread and my parts/$'s were VERY close to below. I just had everything redone (hence this initial thread) at the dealer & they gave me ZERO grief and of course was under warranty. Not sure if an inde shop would have been so easy to work with.

- Remove and Install transmission, replace rear carnkshaft seal $1,260.00
- 997-101-212-00 Shaft sealing ring $22.10
- 900-385-275-01 Hex-head screw 6x20 (x3) $4.80
- 999-385-004-01 Torx head screw 6x35 (x4) $10.00
- 999-073-092-01 Pan-head screw 10x50 (x8) $20.00
- 996-105-017-02 Shaft base $70.09
- Lube 9 Qty Oil $66.87

If still fully-covered by warranty, then obviously no-brainer to go to dealer and not care what it costs since Porsche eats it.

However, most 996s are out of warranty and owners may be sensitive to dealer service costs, thus my post as to indy costs.

Sorry, just to be clear my car was under a 2 year parts warranty from the dealer when I had the RMS done in September and redone in November.
