Flat6 Innovations/Jake Raby has developed a device to be launched in July that will provide a warning of impending dreaded IMS failure allowing the driver to shut down the engine and avoid disaster. Read all about it on Rennlist.com 996 forum. It's been discussed a lot there with Jake giving the scoop. <$400-easy to install. Sounds great. I'm getting it ASAP

Search "My DIY IMS Bearing Upgrade and AOS Replacement" on Rennlist under the 996 forum. There are several other good threads on Rennlist that will tell you all you need to know about DIY IMS replacement. Pelican Parts is also a great resource for tranny removal etc.

Seems like a good idea but I would rather just pay the $1700 for the fix of something that is for sure going to fail at some point on the car. Saving the $400. I for one hate just throwing money out there but since i have a bit saved for such a thing I will go all out. I would 100% do the warning is money get's tight and what not. Thanks for bringing it up,it's the first i have heard of it as well.

Just curious as to the condition of original IMS after retrofit. A quick sampling over at Rennlist shows a large number of the pulled units being in excellent condition.......but then there's that pesky peace of mind thing. A world class indie I use when in NE Ohio and on LNE's list of "can do" wrenches has yet to perform one IMSoctomy.

Yeah, examining my IMS when removed (at 86k mi) was almost pristine. Funny though, it had to be sent to LNE and I couldnt keep it. strange
