Besides F/I what mods for 996 3.4L to hit 12's in 1/4 mile
Besides F/I what mods for 996 3.4L to hit 12's in 1/4 mile
Current mods: Straight pipes, muffler delete. Suggestions: slicks, intake, headers, tune, weight reduction. |
What do you run in a 1/4 now? There is the IDP Plenum, ECU reflash, K&N intake (I believe has the best HP gains). I recall running 13.4 when I missed 3rd back in the day.

I've looked into K&N intake (a lot of MAF triggered issue) But then it all depends on the car. Haven't looked into IDP Plenum and ECU reflash, could you give me a rough estimate on how much these 2 mods cost? I've seen 3.4L 996 hit 12.5 12.7.... |
IPD Plenum is right around $900, and is supposed to give good gains, and a flash you are looking around $1000-$1400. Considering both mods myself, but really want to do some more research first. I have Muffler Bypass and K&N myself, no issues so far. But I don't really do 1/4 mile anymore so I couldn't give you a good time/trap for my 911.

I have a 99 3.4. Custom exhaust, pully and airbox. 12.99 @112mph. 13.2 stock

I'm not really a pro drag so my drag skills is avg. |
My exhaust is simple.. cat back using Spin Tech mufflers. I got 9 hp to the wheel gain on the dyno. underdrive pulley and a cheapo direct air inlet box. you can make it with silicone tubing. A friend has a bone stock 996 and from a 60 mph roll to 100, i can put on 2 car lengths.

Get some 18" TE37's, at a weight per wheel between 17 and 19 pounds ea. That will give you time savings more than plenums and most of all that stuff. There are other wheels of course, but I believe there are as light as they come and if you score a 2nd hand set, even as low as $1,500. There are track wheels.
Then, remove rear seats if you don't use them, racing seats... etc. Weight savings make a big difference. |
Supercharge it!!

You have to understand that being you have muffler bypass pipes you will lose your low end but gain on the high end. Which means the car is now slower in first gear but you gain more in the higher gears.

I will be going to the drag strip next weekend with some friends and one that has a 01 3.4 996 with all the avail bolt ons. I'll report back how we do with it. For point of reference, I was faster than him on a roll on in my 04 M3 DD that I ran 13.4 @ 104 in.
My 05 996 GT3 with all the avail bolt ons (372 rwhp) trapped at 116, (12.3), so unless you have a way of putting another 100whp on your 996, I don't see it being possible. My old 993 (with mods) trapped at 106 (I ran 13.1 in that) and I would walk 3.4 996's pretty easily in that. |
running 12.xx? Possible with a good launch etc etc.
Trap speed? I doubt with even every possible bolt-on non-FI, a 3.4 could trap higher than 105. |

I found an old time slip from when i owned a 1992 Z28. I ran a 13.90 @ 106. All cars are different of course but this 996 runs great! I'm failry familiar with drag times and i think that obtaining a quicker time is n ot acheivable without F/I. Although any car that can be driven on the street with a 12sec 1/4 mile time is plenty fast to have fun in! |
I've been told they ran their 996 3.4L mid and high 12's (12.6-12.9). With few bolt ons, reflash, plenum, etc. It may also depend on the track strip.
