"Brake Wear" dash light won't go off?
I recently had my 'Brake Wear' dash indicator light go on. As a result I had the rear brake pads replaced (fronts were already recently changed), but the indicator light did not go off.
When I changed out the front pads a few months ago, the Brake Wear light just automatically shut off. Would anyone know what would cause it not to shut off this time on the rears? Thanks |
u might need new sensors or it's not plug back in.

I think so too. Often once the sensor is triggered, it's toast and needs replacement. That's an incentive to replace your brakes before it wears out completely.

My mechanic told me he checked that the sensors and the wiring were still okay. As a result he said it's probably the gauge cluster which would require replacing the entire unit for $1600.
I suppose it's worth just buying a couple new sensors just to make sure, unless anyone has any used ones I can borrow. |
Replace the whole gauge cluster?!!?

sensor is cheap less than 15 bucks. the ''brake wear'' light is to tell u the brake has problem & check the brake not to replace the gauge cluster. the mechanic has a great sense of humor though.

Yeah I know. I'm thinking of just putting a little piece of black tape over the 'brake wear' light as an alternative quick fix! I think I'll just buy some extra sensors and install them to see if it clears things up.

Clearly the best solution is to remove the bulb from that part of the cluster. You have to ask yourself, would it kill you to check your brake pad wear every 10K miles like all the rest of the people with cars that don't have brake sensor lights?

It should be easy to test the sensors. Just unplug the one in question and using an Ohm meter check the resistance across the two wires comming from the sensor. If it reads zero or very low the sensor is OK, if the meter reads very high resistance it is toast. Once the culprit is idendified, replace it and you should be good to go.

You have a defect in one of the sensors, replace all 4 and the light WILL go off, 11$ each.

It's prob a sensor as others have said. I've had the same problem myself.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll just change out all 4 of the sensors and see if that clears up the warning light. I'll let you know how it goes...

Just in case you were curious, I took my car to my local performance tuning shop, ES Motorsports in Gardena, and they checked out my brake sensors and found a defective one in the front. Considering the sensor had just been replaced a few months ago, looks like it's not uncommon for them to go bad so soon.
Wouldn't you know it...today I just had the dreaded Air Bag warning light go on! Based on reading previous posts about it, this fix is going to cost me more than just $40 bucks. Damn. |
