I am very surprised by positive energy around SSKs and shifters. Having had multiple Japanese and German stick shifts, I think the box in the 996 is near PERFECT. The throws are smooth, the clutch up-take is perfect so there is minimal drive-line lash and in general, it feels great to me. Anyone had BMW's box? That thing in my E46 M3 was so ****ty with broomstick long throws and horrendous drive-line shunt, even after the CDV delete.

Anyway, how does putting a 997 shifter in a 996 help or change things?

The stock 996 shifter is smooth but the throw is long, any ssk makes it much much better. If you think the stock shifter is near perfect, then you are in for a big surprise and I'll recommend you to go buy an ssk today!!
Yes, it's that much better...

Well any SSK will shorten the throws but will increase the actual effort to find the gates. Before I bought my C4S, one of the C4S's I test drove had an SSK and while I loved the "click" it made when you shifted, I preferred the buttery smooth feel of the stock box better. Now, it could just be the particular SSK kit in the car I drove, so who knows.

Get a 2010 GT3RS shifter and get best of both worlds.

You know what they say about opinions, but in my own, the feel of the stock 996 shifter is pure crap compared to other stock shifters. I'm using the 997 as a reference which is much smoother and much less notchy. An SSK is the first mod I've ordered for my recently acquired 996 (I went Numeric but the GT3 shifter or even the stock 997 stock shifter would be a huge improvement)

Anyone have experience to compare the numeric shifter vs. the 997 ssk?
